Critical review of the impact of cover crops on soil properties

Komlan Koudahe et al.

Summary: This review focuses on the contribution of cover crops to soil properties. It discusses the advantages and uses of different types of cover crops, such as grass species for soil cover and decomposition, broadleaf species for quick decomposition and residue release, and leguminous species for nitrogen fixation. It also highlights the benefits of cover crops in improving soil health, including reducing soil density, improving soil structure and hydraulic properties, and increasing organic carbon and nutrient content. Additionally, cover crops promote microbial activity and diversity. Proper management of cover crops can enhance soil health as an essential practice in soil conservation.

Sustainability by Function (SbF): A Case Study in a Rainfed Vineyard to Reduce the Loss of Soil Nutrients

Manuel Lopez-Vicente et al.

Summary: The effectiveness of using a seeded cover crop to minimize soil nutrient losses in a rainfed vineyard was evaluated. The study found that higher ground cover resulted in lower nutrient losses. Greater ground cover promotes soil health and reduces the need for fertilizers, which is particularly important in a postpandemic world with the threat of war in Ukraine, fertilizer shortages, and the need for local food production.

Ecological intensification of cropping systems enhances soil functions, mitigates soil erosion, and promotes crop resilience to dry spells in the Brazilian Cerrado

Lucas de Castro Moreira da Silva et al.

Summary: The study aimed to assess whether ecological intensification of cropping systems could promote soil coverage and decrease water erosion and soil, water, and nutrient losses. Results showed that ecological intensification led to enhanced soil environmental and agronomic functions, increased grain yield, and promoted soil and water conservation. Ecological intensification proved to be an adequate practice to boost crop resilience to water deficit in the Brazilian Cerrado.

Mulching as best management practice to reduce surface runoff and erosion in steep clayey olive groves

Giuseppe Bombino et al.

Summary: The study showed that mulching soil with pruning residues can significantly reduce runoff and soil erosion, especially at higher application densities, leading to increased organic matter content and vegetation cover in the soil.

Dynamics and losses of soil organic matter and nutrients by water erosion in cover crop management systems in olive groves, in tropical regions

Danielle Vieira Guimaraes et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the dynamics and losses of soil organic matter and nutrients by water erosion in olive groves, under different management systems, in Brazil. The results showed that intercropping olive trees with cover plants improved soil protection, especially in terms of carbon stocks, and should be adopted. Maintaining olive trees without intercropping led to high levels of nutrient and carbon losses, proving to be unsustainable.

Cover crop management and water conservation in vineyard and olive orchards

Agata Novara et al.

Summary: Cover crops play a positive role in the sustainability of orchard crops by reducing soil and water losses, improving soil quality, increasing biodiversity, and fertility. Despite their benefits, farmers do not widely apply cover crops and often expect subsidies.
