Sustainable management of agricultural water and land resources under changing climate and socio-economic conditions: A multi-dimensional optimization approach

Mo Li et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a model framework for the multi-dimensional optimization of agricultural water and land resources management in a changing environment. The model framework comprehensively allocates resources, balances conflicting goals, and proposes alternative allocation schemes to cope with environmental changes, leading to optimal adaptation allocation plans. The feasibility and practicality of the model framework are verified through a real-world case study, showing its potential for sustainable management of agricultural water resources and land resources.

Green water appropriation of the cropland ecosystem in China

Weijing Ma et al.

Summary: This study estimated the green water footprint of main crops in China from 1979 to 2016 using CropWat 8.0, introducing the concept of green water appropriation rate to explore the relationship between green water use and precipitation. The study also investigated the center of gravity trajectory of green water appropriation rate and its correlation with socioeconomic factors for the first time.

Assessing variation and driving factors of the county-scale water footprint for soybean production in China

Jiongchao Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the water footprint of soybean production in China, focusing on its components, spatial-temporal variation, and driving factors. The results showed that the water footprint initially increased and then decreased over the past 30 years, with a clustered spatial distribution in the Northeast, North-central, and Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River Regions. Soybean yield was identified as the major factor influencing the water footprint, with an increase in yield leading to a significant decrease in the water footprint per ton of soybean. These findings provide valuable insights for improving agricultural water management, optimizing water resource allocation, and addressing water scarcity issues in China.

A decision model for stochastic optimization of seasonal irrigation-water allocation

Julio Berbel et al.

Summary: Optimal water allocation on a seasonal basis is often made with uncertainty in mind. The motivation behind increasing water allocation is self-protection and to prevent potential yield losses due to water constraints. Applying a stochastic optimization model to maize in Spain, it was found that the optimal stochastic water allocation is higher than the irrigation dose required under certainty, resulting in increased expected profit.

Allocation of ecological water rights considering ecological networks in arid watersheds: A framework and case study of Tarim River basin

Dong Yan et al.

Summary: This study defines ecological water rights based on the elasticity and relative importance of ecological water use in different regions of a basin, and proposes a method for allocating these rights. The application of this method in the mainstream watershed of Tarim River in China shows that it can meet the ecological water demand of vegetation in important areas when the overall available ecological water is 77% of the demand. However, the demand in non-important areas must be reduced.

A risk-based stochastic model for supporting resources allocation of agricultural water-energy-food system under uncertainty

Weijia Zhang et al.

Summary: A novel mathematical programming method called CITSMIP is proposed to assess water-energy joint risks in irrigation systems and provide optimal resource allocation and water-saving irrigation application schemes. This method can provide valuable insights for decision-makers to maximize benefits.

Decoupling the influence of vegetation and climate on intra-annual variability in runoff in karst watersheds

Qianjun Ye et al.

Summary: Karst landscapes are important water sources for a significant portion of the global population. This study investigated the temporal variations in intra-annual runoff in six karst watersheds in southwest China from 2003 to 2017 and identified the key drivers of these variations. The study found that climate variables and vegetation dynamics strongly influenced the variability in intra-annual runoff.

Risk regulation of water allocation in irrigation areas under changing water supply and demand conditions

Yan Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a risk regulation based modeling approach for the optimal allocation of agricultural water resources. By considering uncertainty and randomness, the approach helps decision-makers evaluate and manage the risk of irrigation water shortages and determine the optimal water allocation scheme.

Assessing irrigated water utilization to optimize irrigation schedule in the oasis-desert ecotone of Hexi Corridor of China

Danfeng Li et al.

Summary: Water scarcity is a major challenge for crop production in arid inland river basins of northwestern China, requiring changes in management strategies to improve crop yield and meet ecological needs. The use of the AquaCrop model can help optimize deficit irrigation schedules, while measures such as plastic mulching and avoiding water logging can enhance water use efficiency.

Optimal allocation of agricultural water resources under the background of China's agricultural water price reform-a case study of Heilongjiang province

Kun Cheng et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing the current agricultural water price without a technology subsidy can lead to a reduction in total income of irrigation farming by 2%-8% and potential negative impacts on food production. However, introducing an irrigation water-saving technology subsidy along with the increased water price can protect farm income and maintain overall food production.
