Using space-time scan statistic for studying the effects of COVID-19 in Punjab, Pakistan: a guideline for policy measures in regional agriculture

Sajjad Hussain et al.

Summary: Pakistan is among the top 50 countries estimated to face serious agricultural and food shortages due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This study evaluated the impact of COVID-19 on food supply chains and agriculture in Punjab, Pakistan, using space-time scan statistics. The findings showed that disruptions in the supply chain could result in difficulties for farmers to access markets and lead to a decline in production and sales of crops and livestock.

Modelling, mapping and monitoring of forest cover changes, using support vector machine, kernel logistic regression and naive bayes tree models with optical remote sensing data

Aqil Tariq et al.

Summary: The present study used RS and GIS techniques to monitor the spatio-temporal changes in forest cover from 1990 to 2017. The results showed that forest area decreased from 1990 to 2010 but increased from 2013 to 2017 due to the implementation of the One Billion Tree Project. This study demonstrated the improvement of forest sustainability through concurrent reforestation in barren land areas and the integration of RS and GIS into forestry organization practices in Khyber Pakhtun Khwa (KPK), Pakistan.

Comprehensive evaluation and sustainable development of water-energy-food-ecology systems in Central Asia

Jingxiu Qin et al.

Summary: Water, energy, food, and ecology play significant roles in the WEFE system in Central Asia. Unreasonable sectoral structure and resource mismatch are important reasons for pressure transmission. The coordination mechanism can optimize the system structure, make trade-offs and synergies for the interests of the sectors, and contribute to the sustainable development of the WEFE system in Central Asia.

Impact of meteorological drought on agriculture production at different scales in Punjab, Pakistan

Muhammad Waseem et al.

Summary: The study quantitatively analyzed the impact of meteorological drought on maize crop production in Punjab, Pakistan, highlighting the sensitivity of yields in the southern region and the significant effect of short-term drought during critical growth periods. Around 27% of yield variations were attributed to meteorological drought, with districts showing increasing sensitivity over time. Recommendations for adopting management strategies and mitigation measures were made based on the spatial and temporal patterns of drought effects on maize production.

Integrated geophysical technique for groundwater salinity delineation, an approach to agriculture sustainability for Nankana Sahib Area, Pakistan

Syed Hassan Iqbal Ahmad Shah et al.

Summary: Due to climatic dryness and shortage of surface water, Pakistani farmers have to rely on groundwater for irrigation. This study used vertical electrical soundings and water sample collection to determine suitable freshwater depths for installing tube wells. The results showed that the central and southeastern regions have good groundwater, while the northwestern region has unfit groundwater.

Rapidly declining surface and terrestrial water resources in Central Asia driven by socio-economic and climatic changes

Wenjing Huang et al.

Summary: The systematic analysis of surface water dynamics in Central Asia is crucial for human survival and ecosystem balance in the region. However, long-term continuous monitoring of surface water remains a challenge due to limitations in spatial resolution. By using Landsat images and interpolation methods, the study finds a decline in permanent surface water areas in downstream countries like Kazakhstan, with human activities being a major driving factor. The findings highlight the water crisis in Central Asia and the need for sustainable water resource management to achieve the UN's Sustainable Development Goals.

Classification of Aquifer Vulnerability by Using the DRASTIC Index and Geo-Electrical Techniques

Syed Hassan Iqbal Ahmad Shah et al.

Summary: The study utilized the DRASTIC model to estimate aquifer vulnerability in areas vulnerable to anthropogenic pollution. The results categorized the research area into high, medium, low, and very low drastic index values, with the SW and NE areas identified as the most vulnerable zones. Additionally, VES and EC results showed a freshwater aquifer in the NE area, brackish water in the SE area, and brackish water in the rest of the area. Validation conducted for the DRASTIC and EC models showed a positive correlation, highlighting the need for wastewater treatment policies to prevent groundwater contamination.

Improving the Accuracy of Fractional Evergreen Forest Cover Estimation at Subpixel Scale in Cloudy and Rainy Areas by Harmonizing Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 Time-Series Data

Taixia Wu et al.

Summary: This study developed a new approach (NDVICV-LS) for mapping urban evergreen forest at the subpixel scale by harmonizing Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 images with low cloud cover to denser the time-series dataset, and distinguishing evergreen forest from other vegetation using the coefficient of variation of NDVI and annual minimum NDVI. The model was validated in the subtropical city of Hefei, showing an 8% improvement in overall accuracy for evergreen forest extraction compared with using Landsat-8 images alone, indicating the potential of the NDVICV-LS model to improve accuracy, especially under complex surface conditions in cloudy and rainy areas.
