Estimation of actual evapotranspiration: A novel hybrid method based on remote sensing and artificial intelligence

Fatemeh Hadadi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the performance of a base artificial intelligence model and its hybrids with two optimization algorithms in estimating actual evapotranspiration. The inclusion of the soil wetness deficit index and the coupling of optimization algorithms improved the accuracy of the estimation.

Impacts of climate change on winter wheat and summer maize dual-cropping system in the North China Plain

Jiadi Li et al.

Summary: Climate change may have potential effects on crop growth in the dual-cropping system of the North China Plain, but the current impact of climate extremes on crop growth is limited. The insensitivity of crop growth to climate extremes may be attributed to widespread irrigation, improved cultivars, and agricultural management. Mean climate conditions have a greater influence on crop growth changes than climate extremes.

Application of an artificial intelligence technique enhanced with intelligent water drops for monthly reference evapotranspiration estimation

Farshad Ahmadi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to estimate the monthly ET0 time series for six stations in Iran using gene expression programming (GEP) and support vector regression (SVR) as standalone models. A new hybrid model, SVR-IWD, was introduced by coupling SVR with an optimization algorithm. Pre-processing techniques of tau Kendall and entropy were used to identify influential weather parameters on ET0. The results showed that the hybrid SVR-IWD model outperformed the standalone SVR model in estimating monthly ET0 under both scenarios.

Water productivity improvement in summer maize-A case study in the North China Plain from 1980 to 2019

Xiying Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed a significant increase in grain yield and water productivity for summer maize in the North China Plain over the past 40 years, mainly attributed to the increase in biomass and harvest index. Recent years witnessed large seasonal yield variations due to deteriorating weather factors, which can be potentially mitigated through effective management practices to improve future WPg.

Developing a process-based and remote sensing driven crop yield model for maize (PRYM-Maize) and its validation over the Northeast China Plain

Zhang Sha et al.

Summary: A process-based and remote sensing driven crop yield model was developed for maize, and implemented using eight data-model coupling strategies over the Northeast China Plain. The model under DMCS8 showed reasonable estimates for maize yield, with higher correlation and smaller error compared to other strategies, demonstrating the potential for improving regional maize yield estimates.

Development of Boosted Machine Learning Models for Estimating Daily Reference Evapotranspiration and Comparison with Empirical Approaches

Saeid Mehdizadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, two new coupled models were developed for estimating daily ETo, with the ANFIS-SFLA outperforming the ANFIS-IWO. The Valiantzas model generally presented the best performance among empirical models, and increasing the number of predictors enhanced model performance. The hybrid ANFIS-SFLA models provided the most accurate estimates of daily ETo at the two studied sites, with high R-2 and NSE values of 0.99.

Fifteen-year Variations of Water Use Efficiency over a Wheat-Maize Rotation Cropland in the North China Plain

Xingyu Hu et al.

Summary: Among the five water use efficiency indicators studied in a typical winter wheat-summer maize rotation cropland in the North China Plain, plant-canopy WUE showed the lowest interannual variability and could be regarded as stationary for both crops, while inherent WUE and underlying WUE were found to be non-stationary for both crops.

Tracking the spatio-temporal change of planting area of winter wheat-summer maize cropping system in the North China Plain during 2001-2018

Jiadi Li et al.

Summary: Identifying winter wheat-summer maize distribution is crucial for agricultural water management in the North China Plain, where conflicts between food production and water scarcity exist. Analysis based on MODIS data reveals a slight increase in winter wheat-summer maize planting area from 2001 to 2018, followed by a significant decrease after 2012. The spatial distribution shows shrinking in certain areas while expansion in others, providing valuable information for optimizing crop water resource allocation.
