Heterotrophic respiration and its proportion to total soil respiration decrease with warming but increase with clipping

Yingjie Yan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a 7-year manipulation experiment to investigate the impacts of warming and clipping on heterotrophic respiration (Rh) and its contribution to soil respiration (Rs) in an alpine meadow. The results showed that warming decreased the Rh/Rs ratio, mainly due to the increase in autotrophic respiration (Ra), while clipping increased the Rh/Rs ratio, mainly due to the increase in Rh. The study highlights the importance of quantifying the responses of Rh and the Rh/Rs ratio to global changes.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Grassland changes and adaptive management on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau

Yanfen Wang et al.

Summary: This review examines the impacts of climate change and human activities on grasslands in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. It discusses the changes in vegetation and soil, as well as the drivers behind these changes. The study finds that rising temperatures have been key in driving vegetation increases, while intense livestock grazing has caused grassland degradation. Effective restoration can be achieved through management policies and adaptive management, leading to improvements in net primary production.

Multiple-scale negative impacts of warming on ecosystem carbon use efficiency across the Tibetan Plateau grasslands

Ning Chen et al.

Summary: This study revealed a suppressive and nonlinear effect of warming on CUEe, with a significant decrease seen in high-level warming treatments. The findings suggest that the response of CUEe transitions from no change to a significant decrease with a warming threshold of 1.5-2.0 degrees Celsius. The study highlights the importance of considering the nonlinear effects of warming on CUEe components for optimizing ecosystem models and predicting carbon sequestration capacity in alpine grasslands.

Combatting global grassland degradation

Richard D. Bardgett et al.

Summary: Grasslands provide crucial ecosystem services, but are often overlooked in sustainable policy. Degradation of grasslands threatens biodiversity, ecosystem services, and human well-being. Strategies to combat degradation and promote restoration include increasing global recognition of grasslands, developing standardized indicators, using scientific innovation for effective restoration, and enhancing knowledge transfer and data sharing. These actions can help halt degradation, enhance restoration success, and protect the socio-economic, cultural, and ecological benefits that grasslands provide.
