Contrasting impacts of forests on cloud cover based on satellite observations

Ru Xu et al.

Summary: This study uses satellite data to demonstrate the contrasting effect of forests on summer cloud cover in different regions, with temperate and boreal forests enhancing clouds and forests in the Amazon, Central Africa, and Southeast US inhibiting clouds. The spatial variation in cloud effects is driven by differences in sensible heat.

Impacts of afforestation on land surface temperature in different regions of China

Guanghui Yuan et al.

Summary: To assess the impacts of afforestation on land surface temperature in China, this study compared adjacent forest and open land using ten years of satellite data. The results showed that afforestation leads to daytime cooling and nighttime warming in most regions, attributed to changes in evapotranspiration and albedo. The cooling effects of evapotranspiration dominate the daytime differences in temperature, while the nighttime warming effects are related to the release of stored energy in the soil. Evergreen broadleaf forest and deciduous broadleaf forest are recommended for afforestation in the south and north of the Yangtze River respectively to decrease land surface temperature.

Effect of shrub encroachment on land surface temperature in semi-arid areas of temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere

Xiangjin Shen et al.

Summary: Under the influences of climate change and human activities, grassland ecosystems are facing the threat of shrub encroachment. This study quantified the biophysical effects of shrub encroachment on regional climate in temperate semi-arid areas of the Northern Hemisphere using satellite data. The results show that shrub encroachment tends to increase surface temperature in most areas, while decreasing it in some relatively humid regions. These findings highlight the importance of considering the impact of shrub encroachment on regional climate in climate models and the need for further research on the climate feedbacks and ecosystem properties.

The Seasonal Cycle of Surface Soil Moisture

Mason O. Stahl et al.

Summary: The seasonal cycle of soil moisture globally is important for agriculture, human health, and ecosystems. This study uses global satellite observations to describe and explain the spatial variability of the seasonal cycle. An unsupervised clustering algorithm identifies five distinct seasonal cycle regimes, which are well reproduced by a physically based water balance model without considering vegetation or land cover information.

New land-use-change emissions indicate a declining CO2 airborne fraction

Margreet J. E. van Marle et al.

Summary: This article indirectly estimates the efficiency of land and ocean carbon sinks by analyzing the trends in the atmospheric ratio and provides evidence that the carbon uptake by land and ocean is keeping pace with anthropogenic emissions. It also shows that tropical deforestation emissions have increased significantly and contribute to the decrease in the CO2 airborne fraction.

Projections of fire probability and ecosystem vulnerability under 21st century climate across a trans-Andean productivity gradient in Patagonia

Thomas Kitzberger et al.

Summary: Warming trends are impacting fire regimes and ecosystems, with fire probabilities being more sensitive to current fire weather than other factors. The anticipated drier and warmer fire seasons in the region will significantly increase fire probabilities for the mid- and late 21st century. The vulnerability to shorter fire intervals in the late 21st century is higher in more productive ecosystems due to a lack of fire-adapted traits in dominant trees.

Estimation of Global Irrigation Water Use by the Integration of Multiple Satellite Observations

Summary: This study proposes a comprehensive framework to estimate global irrigation water use (IWU) by integrating multiple satellite observations. The results show that the integrated IWU estimate outperforms individual satellite observations, but there is a general underestimation of IWU globally. Further efforts are needed to improve the accuracy of global IWU estimation by producing high-quality and finer spatiotemporal resolution satellite-based products.

Urbanization Contributes Little to Global Warming but Substantially Intensifies Local and Regional Land Surface Warming

Decheng Zhou et al.

Summary: Increasing urbanization leads to the urban heat island effect and worsens health risks from heat waves due to global warming. Using high-resolution satellite observations, this study quantifies the warming effects of urbanization at local, regional, and global scales. The results show that 88% of urbanized areas globally experience local warming effects, while the remaining areas have cooling effects on average. The study also highlights the substantial regional warming effects of urbanization, particularly in eastern China, the eastern United States, and Europe. Furthermore, global urban expansion is responsible for over three-quarters of the urban heat island effect, and its impact is projected to increase by 50% to 200% by the end of the century.

Converted vegetation type regulates the vegetation greening effects on land surface albedo in arid regions of China

Yixuan Zhu et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between land surface albedo (LSA) and vegetation changes in the arid and semi-arid areas of China. The results show that LSA generally decreased during 2000-2018 in response to significant greening in the region. The conversions of grassland to cultivated land or forest land led to a contraction in LSA change, while the conversions of forest land to other vegetations amplified the change. Greening dominated LSA change, except in the conversion of grassland to forest land where land use/land cover change accounted for a significant portion of LSA change.

Increased drought effects on the phenology of autumn leaf senescence

Chaoyang Wu et al.

Summary: Global warming has delayed the autumn date of foliar senescence (DFS) in recent decades, which has positive implications for growing season length and global carbon storage. However, warming-associated drought may stimulate earlier DFS due to water limitation. This study uses ground observations and satellite data to show the increased impact of drought on DFS, linking it to decreased precipitation under warming and weaker drought resistance in plants with different functional traits. An improved set of phenology models based on these findings suggests earlier DFS by the end of the century, especially in high latitude areas.

Summary: This study used a machine learning model and interpretation technique to investigate the effects of climatic variables on vegetation productivity in the Amazon rainforests. The results showed that temperature was the dominant driver of net primary productivity (NPP) in different regions, with variations in the importance score. Additionally, light augmentation, increased CO2 concentration, and decreased precipitation positively contributed to NPP, while high wind speed led to substantial NPP loss.

Different countries also experience varying temperature changes due to the size of their cropland areas and local climate effects.

Summary: Forests play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by sequestering carbon, but they can also impact the climate system by altering cloud cover.
