Derivation of benchmark doses for male reproductive toxicity in a subacute low-level Pb exposure model in rats

Dragana Vukelic et al.

Summary: The study aimed to simulate low-level lead exposure in an animal model and evaluate its reproductive adverse effects. Benchmarked dose-response modeling was performed based on collected data. Male Wistar rats were divided into seven groups (n = 6): one control group and six groups treated with different doses of lead. After 28 days of treatment, the rats were sacrificed and their blood and testes were analyzed for testosterone levels, essential metal levels, and histological changes. The results showed a dose-dependent decrease in serum testosterone levels and an increase in zinc levels in the testes, but no adverse effects on testicular histology were observed. These findings provide important information for the assessment of lead's impact on human health.

Impact of hypoxia on male reproductive functions

P. A. Oyedokun et al.

Summary: This review examines the impact of hypoxia on male reproductive functions. Acute exposure to hypoxia promotes testosterone production, while chronic exposure impairs steroidogenesis. Hypoxia also distorts spermatogenesis and reduces sperm count, motility, and normal forms. Additionally, hypoxia induces sexual and erectile dysfunction. It is important to explore the effects of antioxidants and upregulation of transcription of antioxidants on hypoxia-induced male reproductive dysfunction.

Zinc normalizes hepatic lipid handling via modulation of ADA/XO/UA pathway and caspase 3 signaling in highly active antiretroviral therapy-treated Wistar rats

M. A. Hamed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the involvement of the ADA/XO/UA pathway and caspase 3 signaling in HAART-induced hepatic lipid accumulation and found that downregulation of these pathways may rescue the liver from HAART-induced injury. Zinc may also confer protection against HAART-induced liver lipid accumulation and injury.

Toxic Mechanisms of Five Heavy Metals: Mercury, Lead, Chromium, Cadmium, and Arsenic

Mahdi Balali-Mood et al.

Summary: Industrial activities of the last century have led to increased human exposure to heavy metals such as mercury, lead, chromium, cadmium, and arsenic, resulting in acute or chronic poisonings through water, air, and food. These heavy metals accumulate in the body, causing toxic effects on various tissues and organs by disrupting cellular events and inducing oxidative stress. Common mechanisms of action of these metals include ROS generation, inhibition of antioxidant defense, enzyme inactivation, and selective binding to specific macromolecules, some leading to genomic instability and carcinogenicity through DNA damage and oxidative stress. Despite current knowledge, heavy metal poisoning incidents remain prevalent, necessitating preventive measures and effective treatment, possibly including chelation therapy.
