Stochastic population balance methods for detailed modelling of flame-made aerosol particles

Astrid Boje et al.

Summary: Particle formation and growth through chemical reactions and physical processes have wide implications, with Monte Carlo methods being highlighted as a key numerical tool in studying this phenomenon. High-dimensional particle models and detailed population balance modeling have shown promise in providing close agreement with experimental data and enabling study of industrially relevant systems, while challenges such as flow-chemistry-particle coupling remain to be addressed in future research directions.

Effects of agglomerate characteristics on their collision kernels in the free molecular regime

Weijia Qian et al.

Summary: The collision frequencies of fractal clusters are modeled using Langevin dynamics to predict cluster growth due to agglomeration. The simulations reveal that collision radii scale with gyration radius and are affected by various morphologies, with fractal dimension being the dominant factor. The study also quantifies the increasing effect of van der Waals forces on collision radii and proposes a new linear model for predicting collision radii with high accuracy.

Modeling particle-particle binary coagulation rate constants for spherical aerosol particles at high volume fractions using Langevin Dynamics simulations

Vikram Suresh et al.

Summary: The effect of volume fraction and particle-particle hydrodynamic interactions on the coagulation rate of particles is investigated in this study. Langevin Dynamics based trajectory simulations are used to model particle coagulation, and the Kirkwood-Risemann approach is employed to calculate particle-particle hydrodynamic interactions. The results show that the coagulation rate constant depends on the diffusive Knudsen number, momentum Knudsen number, and particle volume fraction.

Impact of the competition between aggregation and surface growth on the morphology of soot particles formed in an ethylene laminar premixed flame

Jose Moran et al.

Summary: Surface growth of soot particles has a significant impact on aggregation kinetics, particle morphology, and both aggregate and monomer size distributions. The local compacity of particles considerably increases when aggregates experience surface growth.

An experimentally validated model of diffusion charging of arbitrary shaped aerosol particles

Li Li et al.

Summary: The shape of particles plays a crucial role in diffusion charging of aerosol particles exposed to bipolar/unipolar ions, requiring accurate modeling to predict the charge distribution of non-spherical particles. A new extended beta(i) model based on Langevin dynamics simulations of non-spherical particle-ion collisions has been developed to account for various particle shapes and validated against experimental data, showing good accuracy in predicting charge states for different shapes and arrangements of particles. The model is useful for predicting bipolar and unipolar charge distributions of arbitrary shaped aerosol particles across a wide range of conditions, although further research is needed to address simplifications in the current model related to particle conductivity and external electric fields.

Tutorial: Langevin Dynamics methods for aerosol particle trajectory simulations and collision rate constant modeling

Vikram Suresh et al.

Summary: The Langevin Dynamics (LD) method is commonly used in simulating aerosol particle trajectories and calculating transport rate constants. This tutorial explains the methodological details of setting up LD simulations for aerosol particles, discussing the applicability and limitations of the translational Langevin equation. It also covers common forces in aerosol systems, time stepping schemes, and potential applications and caveats of using LD.
