This work provides a theoretical explanation for obtaining collision kernels from the first-time passage approach proposed by Gopalakrishnan and Hogan Jr. (2011). The new approach offers an interesting correction for particle coagulation at high concentrations and highlights the limitations of classical derivations by Fuchs (1964) and Friedlander (2000) in neglecting the transient part of the diffusive collision kernel.
A theoretical explanation for obtaining collision kernels from the first-time passage approach proposed by [Gopalakrishnan, R., & Hogan Jr., C. J. (2011). Aerosol Science and Technology, 45(12), 1499-1509] is developed in this work. This new approach leads to an interesting correction for particle coagulation at high concentrations and enlights the limitations of classical derivations by [Fuchs, N. A. (1964). Dover Publications] and [Friedlander, S. K. (2000). (Vol. 198).
