Anisotropic rate-dependent saturation functions for compositional simulation of sandstone composites

Maartje Boon et al.

Summary: Determining representative saturation functions for permeable reservoir sandstones requires considering laminations and crossbedding at the mm-cm scale. By modeling selected laminated sandstones and analyzing the drainage relative permeability, we found that flow-rate dependent drainage behavior is influenced by small, but spatially correlated grain size and permeability variations. We developed a set of anisotropic extended saturation functions suitable for compositional simulation, allowing for investigation of feedbacks between reservoir-scale flow regime and bed-scale phase mobility.

Time-lapse imaging of flow instability and rock heterogeneity impacts on CO2 plume migration in meter long sandstone cores

Mojtaba Seyyedi et al.

Summary: Our understanding and modelling of flow instabilities in the presence of geological heterogeneity is limited by a lack of experimental observations at relevant scales. In this study, we conducted fluid-flow experiments using high-pressure equipment and medical X-Ray CT imaging in meter-long sandstone samples, providing a 3D experimental dataset. The results show that under field-relevant conditions, structural heterogeneity and buoyancy largely control the flow, with little viscous instability.

Modelling CO2 plume spreading in highly heterogeneous rocks with anisotropic, rate-dependent saturation functions: A field-data based numeric simulation study of Otway

Qi Shao et al.

Summary: In this simulation study based on field data, novel rate-dependent, anisotropic saturation functions are applied to match the flow behavior of sand-and siltstones. The study investigates the factors controlling plume migration through scenario analysis. The results reveal the importance of high-permeability streaks, intraformational baffles, buoyancy forces, and injection rates in determining the shape and movement of the CO2 plume.

Predicting plume spreading during CO2 geo-sequestration: benchmarking a new hybrid finite element-finite volume compositional simulator with asynchronous time marching

Qi Shao et al.

Summary: The study presents benchmark simulations for plume spreading during CO2 geo-sequestration using ACGSS with results similar to established compositional simulators. Minor discrepancies can be attributed to alternative discretisation and NaCl solubility treatment. While the benchmarks did not cover geologically challenging features of CO2 storage sites, they demonstrated the advantages of FEFVM discretisation and asynchronous time stepping.

Impact of Sub-core-scale Heterogeneity on Meter-Scale Flow and Brine Displacement in Drainage by CO2

Z. Moreno et al.

Summary: This study investigates CO2-brine two-phase flow in a cubic rock incorporating sub-core heterogeneity. Results show significant impact of gravity and capillary heterogeneity on saturation and brine trapping in low capillary pressure regions. The study presents a correlation between trapping and permeability statistical parameters, as well as the Bond number characterizing gravity and capillary effects.

Impact of the vertical resolution of corner-point grids on CO2 plume migration predictions for layered aquifers

AbdAllah A. Youssef et al.

Summary: The vertical grid resolution has a first-order correlation with the predicted plume extent, capillary forces reduce plume extent and enhance aquifer storage, and model sensitivity to grid resolution scales with the permeability contrast between layers. An underestimation of CO2 mobility at the top of the plume is identified as the root cause of plume retardation. This interpretation is confirmed through comparison with two alternative simulators.

Reliability of Relative Permeability Measurements for Heterogeneous Rocks Using Horizontal Core Flood Experiments

Chia-Wei Kuo et al.

Summary: New guidelines and suggestions for taking reliable effective relative permeability measurements in heterogeneous rocks have been presented. The results show that accurate whole-core effective relative permeability measurements can be obtained regardless of the orientation of the core under a range of relevant and practical conditions. The transition from viscous to gravity/capillary dominated flow regimes occurs at much higher flow rates for heterogeneous rocks.

A physics-based model to predict the impact of horizontal lamination on CO2 plume migration

Maartje Boon et al.

Summary: The study shows that sub-grid scale horizontal lamination has a significant impact on the migration of CO2 plume during geologic sequestration, especially during the initial phase of injection. By incorporating capillary and viscous forces in a physics-based model, effective flow-rate dependent capillary pressure and relative permeability functions have been obtained to accurately describe the capillary number dependency.

Multiscale Digital Rock Analysis for Complex Rocks

L. C. Ruspini et al.

Summary: The properties of complex rocks are influenced by heterogeneity at different scales, making it challenging to capture all relevant length scales in detail with standard digital rock analysis tools. A multiscale imaging and pore-scale modeling workflow is introduced to derive transport properties of complex rocks with broad pore size distributions. This workflow categorizes unresolved porosity regions, combines 3D rock-type and porosity maps, and treats unresolved network elements as a continuum Darcy-type porous medium. The methodology is successfully applied to heterogeneous rock samples with promising results in predicting transport properties.
