A fast numerical method and optimization of 3D discrete fracture network considering fracture aperture heterogeneity

Kangsheng Xue et al.

Summary: A novel numerical method was developed to evaluate the effect of aperture heterogeneity on fluid flow in three-dimensional discrete fracture networks. This method showed advantages in computational accuracy and efficiency. The study found that aperture heterogeneity influenced fluid flow, but the impact decreased with increasing mechanical aperture or fracture density. Beyond a critical mechanical aperture, aperture heterogeneity could be neglected, allowing for efficient modeling with the DFN-I model.

Connectivity, permeability and flow channelization in fractured karst reservoirs: A numerical investigation based on a two-dimensional discrete fracture-cave network model

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: Fractured karst reservoirs are important for hydrocarbon reserves and groundwater storage, but their complex heterogeneities pose challenges in characterizing their connectivity and hydraulic conductivity. This study proposes an analytical formulation to characterize the connectivity of discrete fracture-cave networks and explores the relationship between connectivity and permeability through numerical simulations. The results show a power law scaling between connectivity and permeability, with significant flow channeling occurring around the percolation threshold.

On fluid flow regime transition in rough rock fractures: Insights from experiment and fluid dynamic computation

Yong Luo et al.

Summary: The influence of roughness, aperture, and asperity irregularity on fluid flow regimes in rough rock fractures was investigated through experimental and numerical studies. It was found that there are three different fluid flow regimes in the fractures, including pre-linear flow, linear Darcy's flow, and post-linear flow. The pre-linear flow is caused by the slippage effect of water-fracture interfaces, while the post-linear flow is mainly due to inertial effects.

Role of heterogeneous surface wettability on dynamic immiscible displacement, capillary pressure, and relative permeability in a CO2-water-rock system

Ruichang Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of pore-scale wettability heterogeneity on immiscible two-fluid displacement in porous media. The results show that heterogeneous wettability causes local redistribution of CO2 and water and has a more significant effect on relative permeability curves than on capillary pressure-water saturation curves.

Water-gas flow in rough rock fractures: insights from coupled triaxial compression experiments

Yakun Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the flow processes of two-phase fluid influenced by phase interference, pressure drop, fracture roughness, and environmental stress. The experimental results show that each fluid phase has a separate flow channel and the relative permeability of water is greater than gas. Additionally, the sum of relative permeabilities is less than unity, indicating the influence of phase interference.

Experimental and numerical study for the inertial dependence of non-Darcy coefficient in rough single fractures

Kun Xing et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of fluid flow inertial effect on the non-Darcy coefficient through experiments and numerical simulations. The results showed a relationship between the non-Darcy coefficient and the fluid inertial effect, indicating the importance of considering both geometric properties and fluid inertia in studying fracture flow behavior. The study also proposed an improved quantification model of the non-Darcy coefficient and a new critical Reynolds number prediction model that considers the coupling effect of fluid and media properties.

Channeling flow and anomalous transport due to the complex void structure of rock fractures

Zhihe Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates flow channeling and anomalous transport behaviors in a granite fracture, focusing on the impact of increasing surface contacts. The results show that areas with large apertures but poor connectivity in the fracture may have negligible contribution to overall flow, with limited effect on solute transport. Increased surface contact leads to stronger flow channeling and anomalous transport due to enhanced flow heterogeneity from the complex fracture void structure.

Two-Phase Relative Permeability of Rough-Walled Fractures: A Dynamic Pore-Scale Modeling of the Effects of Aperture Geometry

Yanbin Gong et al.

Summary: This study utilizes a dynamic pore-network modeling framework to systematically investigate relative permeability curves under two-phase flow conditions in rough-walled fractures, proposing two new correlations to describe the relative permeability curves. The results provide novel insights into the effects of geometric characteristics on two-phase flow properties, leading to a better understanding of the influence of these features on fluid-fluid interfacial area, phase interference, and relative permeability in the research area.

Effects of wettability on relative permeability of rough-walled fracture at pore-scale: A lattice Boltzmann analysis

Jie Yi et al.

Summary: This study investigated two-phase flow in rough-walled fractures with different surface wettability using an improved lattice Boltzmann model and a discrete fracture network model. The impact of contact angle and fracture aperture on fluid flow distribution, velocity field, and relative permeability curves was clarified. It was found that fluid relative permeability in rough-walled fractures can exhibit instabilities due to wettability-related microscale fluid distribution.

On an efficient time scheme based on a new mathematical representation of thermodynamic equilibrium for multiphase compositional Darcy flows in porous media

J. Coatleven et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new mathematical representation of multiphase thermodynamic equilibrium using repartition coefficients, allowing the derivation of computationally efficient time schemes for multiphase Darcy flow. The model effectively handles mass conservation, thermodynamic equilibrium, and pore volume conservation, separating the thermodynamic equilibrium from the flow part through repartition coefficients. Numerical experiments demonstrate the good performance of this approach in various cases.
