Sophorolipids bioproduction in the yeast Starmerella bombicola: Current trends and perspectives

Muneer Ahmed Qazi et al.

Summary: Sophorolipids are highly active green surfactants appreciated worldwide for their low toxicity, biodegradability, wide range of applications, and biotechnological potential. The oleaginous budding yeast Starmerella bombicola is the main producer of sophorolipids using low-cost substrates. Genetic engineering tools in S. bombicola offer possibilities to improve production titers, structural variability, and stability of sophorolipids. Advanced technologies like 'Omics and CRISPR/Cas have also contributed to rational engineering research.

Synergistic effect of silica nanofluid and biosurfactant on bitumen recovery from unconventional oil

Jinjian Hou et al.

Summary: In this paper, the stability of nanofluid (bionanofluid) prepared by dispersing SiO2 nanoparticles in water (biosurfactant-sophorolipid) solution was investigated. The results showed that the addition of sophorolipid improved the stability of nanofluids, forming a layer on the surface of the SiO2 nanoparticles and increasing the steric hindrance between the nanoparticles. The nanofluid also exhibited the ability to alter the solid wettability and reduce the oil-water interfacial tension. The synergistic effect of silica nanoparticles and biosurfactant on bitumen recovery was observed. The study also calculated the structural disjoining pressure to explain the enhanced oil recovery.

A multi-omics study to boost continuous bolaform sophorolipid production

Sven Dierickx et al.

Summary: The study aimed to reduce production costs for bolaform sophorolipids, a type of microbial biosurfactant, through a novel continuous retentostat setup. While productivity initially increased, it ultimately declined under limited nutrient supply. Strategies such as sequential batch operation and phosphate limitation alleviation were effective in temporarily boosting productivity, but also led to subsequent declines.

Developing an understanding of sophorolipid synthesis through application of a central composite design model

Benjamin Ingham et al.

Summary: Sophorolipid biosurfactants require suitable media conditions to improve productivity and reduce production costs. A central composite design was applied to analyze the effects of altering glucose, rapeseed oil, corn steep liquor and ammonium sulphate concentrations on sophorolipid production. An optimum media composition was found, and a regression model was developed for substrate screening and process optimization.

Antimicrobial activity of sophorolipids produced by Starmerella bombicola against phytopathogens from cherry tomato

Talita de O. Caretta et al.

Summary: Results showed that sophorolipids inhibited the mycelial growth in vitro at a minimum concentration of 2 mg mL(-1). Applying sophorolipids at 1, 2, and 4 mg mL(-1) on tomato leaves before inoculation of B. cinerea was the most effective treatment, reducing leaf necrosis by up to 76.90%. Washing tomato fruits with sophorolipids before inoculation of B. cinerea could inhibit gray mold development by up to 96.27%.

Summary: Chemistry and topography are two tools for customizing bio-inspired liquid wettability. While topography has been the dominant approach in the past, the emergence of chemical modulation allows for more controlled tailoring of liquid wettability. This review summarizes various reports that highlight the importance of both chemistry and topography in modulating bio-inspired wettability and discusses the advantages of chemical modulation over topographical variation.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of adding a block copolymer and including a quartz substrate on the self-assembly of cationic (CTAB) micelles. It was found that the quartz substrate causes the micelles to elongate, and in the presence of both P123 and the quartz substrate, the micelle shape changes from ellipsoid core-shell to cylindrical core-shell, leading to a significantly higher number of aggregates.

Endocrine disrupting potency and toxicity of novel sophorolipid quaternary ammonium salts

Ewa Liwarska-Bizukojc et al.

Summary: A new class of biosurfactants, quaternary ammonium sophorolipids (SQAS), were tested for their estrogenic and androgenic potency as well as their toxicity towards yeasts and bacteria. Acetylation of the hydroxyl group of the carbohydrate head of SQAS was found to decrease their toxicity towards yeasts and endocrine disrupting potency. SQAS1 and SQAS2 showed weak antiestrogenic and antiandrogenic effects, while SQAS3 exhibited inhibitory activity towards male hormones. Cytotoxicity of some SQAS interfered with endocrine disruption activity.

Joseph K. Ogunjobi et al.

Summary: There is a growing demand for surfactants based on sophorolipids because they are produced by non-pathogenic organisms, biodegradable, and less toxic to humans and the environment. A novel range of non-ionic sophorolipid-based surfactants was developed by modifying commercially available lactonic sophorolipid through epoxidation and ring-opening reactions with poly(ethylene glycol) of different chain lengths. These surfactants were structurally characterized and their potential applications were predicted, showing they could be used as wetting agents, solubilizers, oil-in-water emulsifiers, and detergents.
