Atom-by-Atom Direct Writing

Ondrej Dyck et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate an electron beam direct-write process in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. This process differs from conventional electron-beam-induced deposition techniques as it uses a different mechanism and elemental tin (Sn) as a precursor to enable atom-by-atom direct writing. The atomic-sized electron beam is used to generate chemically reactive point defects in a graphene substrate, allowing the precursor atoms to migrate and bond to the defect sites for deposition.

Real-Time Diagnostics of 2D Crystal Transformations by Pulsed Laser Deposition: Controlled Synthesis of Janus WSSe Monolayers and Alloys

Sumner B. Harris et al.

Summary: In this study, a feedback approach was used to investigate the transformation pathways of monolayer WS2 crystals into Janus WSSe and WSe2. Real-time Raman spectroscopy and photoluminescence were employed to assess the structure, composition, and optoelectronic quality of the monolayer crystal during the implantation of selenium. The results provide a method to achieve fractional and complete Janus WSSe monolayers as metastable transition states.

The role of temperature on defect diffusion and nanoscale patterning in graphene

Ondrej Dyck et al.

Summary: Graphene has unique properties such as ballistic transport, spin selectivity, quantum hall effect, etc., making it of great scientific interest. Nanopatterning and atomic scale modifications of graphene can further control its properties, including electronic properties and defect evolution.

Combined electronic excitation and knock-on damage in monolayer MoS2

Carsten Speckmann et al.

Summary: This study measures the displacement cross section for sulfur atoms in MoS2 and correlates the results with existing measurements and theoretical models. It finds that a combined inelastic and elastic damage mechanism is active at intermediate energies, while a pure elastic mechanism dominates above 80 keV. These results provide experimental data for electron irradiation damage in two-dimensional semiconducting materials and support recent reports in the literature.

Bridging microscopy with molecular dynamics and quantum simulations: an atomAI based pipeline

Ayana Ghosh et al.

Summary: Recent advances in transmission electron microscopy enable the generation of large volumes of high-veracity structural data on 2D and 3D materials. To overcome the challenge of using these data for atomistic simulations, researchers have developed a machine learning workflow that bridges the instrument data stream and physics-based simulation environment. This approach has been successfully applied to a graphene system and has the potential to be used for other material systems as well.

Doping transition-metal atoms in graphene for atomic-scale tailoring of electronic, magnetic, and quantum topological properties

Ondrej Dyck et al.

Summary: Atomic-scale fabrication is a major challenge and goal for the nanoscience community. Using free-standing graphene as a platform, the focused electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope can induce defects and sculpt the graphene with highly localized control. This study demonstrates the selective insertion of transition metal atoms into graphene and explores their properties through first-principles density functional theory calculations.

Single Indium Atoms and Few-Atom Indium Clusters Anchored onto Graphene via Silicon Heteroatoms

Kenan Elibol et al.

Summary: This research demonstrates the self-assembly of single indium atoms and few-atom indium clusters in suspended monolayer graphene membranes, anchored to substitutional silicon impurity atoms. Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) revealed that the symmetry of the indium structures is dependent on the coordination of the silicon anchors. Furthermore, electron beam irradiation in STEM enables the observation of formation, restructuring, and translation of the silicon-anchored indium structures.
