Editors' Choice-Necessity to Avoid Titanium Oxide as Electrocatalyst Support in PEM Fuel Cells: A Membrane Durability Study

Jingxin Zhang et al.

Summary: Pt/TiO2 as an electrocatalyst significantly increases the membrane chemical degradation rate in PEM fuel cells, attributed to TiOx. Migration of Ti species due to TiOx dissolution affects the total fluorine inventory loss of the membrane. TiOx is deemed unsuitable as an electrocatalyst support for PEM fuel cells, suggesting future research focus on alternative oxides with similar corrosion resistance.

Effect of Carbon Support Characteristics on Fuel Cell Durability in Accelerated Stress Testing

Chunmei Wang et al.

Summary: Support carbon corrosion is a major degradation mechanism affecting fuel cell performance. An accelerated stress test was conducted at Ford to evaluate the durability of five MEAs made from CCMs containing different carbon supports, catalyst loadings, compositions, I/C ratios, and ionomer EWs. The study focused on carbon loss, voltage degradation, ECSA loss, catalyst layer thickness reduction, catalyst dispersion change, and electrode porosity change post-AST.

Effect of Catalyst and Catalyst Layer Composition on Catalyst Support Durability

Siddharth Komini Babu et al.

Summary: The study shows that carbon support corrosion is similar between platinum (Pt) and platinum-cobalt (PtCo) catalysts. However, the performance degradation rate is higher for alloy catalysts due to differences in catalyst particle size and the leaching of transition metals. Lower initial carbon loading in catalysts results in lower carbon loss and better durability, but the cumulative loss of carbon remains the same for electrodes with the same catalyst support regardless of catalyst and ionomer composition in the catalyst layer.
