Retardation of Structure Densification by Increasing Covalency in Li-Rich Layered Oxide Positive Electrodes for Li-Ion Batteries

Aleksandra A. Savina et al.

Summary: Due to the excellent discharge capacity provided by oxygen redox activity, Li-rich layered oxide positive electrode materials have attracted great attention. However, there is still no consensus regarding the role of ionocovalency of transition metal-oxygen chemical bonding in the reversibility of oxygen redox and the local crystal and electronic structure transformations. In this study, we successfully manipulated the cationic/anionic redox contributions to the overall electrochemical activity and investigated the importance of enhancing the covalency of the TM-O bonding for anchoring the reversibility of the charge compensation mechanism.

Ion-Migration Mechanism: An Overall Understanding of Anionic Redox Activity in Metal Oxide Cathodes of Li/Na-Ion Batteries

Yangyang Lai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the activation mechanism of the anionic redox reaction (ARR) in cathode materials for Li/Na-ion batteries by designing Mg/Li/Zn-substituted NaxMnO2 and LixMnO2 cathode materials. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that the activation of ARR is only observed in Li-substituted LixMnO2, while all Mg/Li/Zn-substituted NaxMnO2 cathode materials show ARR activities. The study proposes an ion-migration mechanism to explain the different ARR behaviors between NaxMnO2 and LixMnO2, providing insights for the development of high-capacity metal oxide cathode materials for LIBs/SIBs.

The Role of Ni and Co in Suppressing O-Loss in Li-Rich Layered Cathodes

Edouard Boivin et al.

Summary: It is shown that almost complete eradication of oxygen loss with Ni substitution is due to the presence of a less lithium-rich, more nickel-rich rocksalt shell at the surface of the particles compared with the bulk. Thinner rocksalt shell forms in the case of Ni and Co co-substitution, leading to more abundant oxygen loss. Co doping does not result in a surface shell yet it still suppresses oxygen loss, indicating that two mechanisms exist for oxygen loss suppression.

Delocalized Metal-Oxygen π-Redox Is the Origin of Anomalous Nonhysteretic Capacity in Li-Ion and Na-Ion Cathode Materials

Daniil A. Kitchaev et al.

Summary: The study presents the first consistent mechanism of nonhysteretic oxidation beyond the transition metal limit, explaining the electrochemical and structural evolution of Na2Mn3O7 and Li2IrO3 model materials. The source of anomalous nonhysteretic capacity is identified as a pi-bonded metal-d and O-p orbital network, enabled by a unique resistance to transition metal migration. Voltage, accessible capacity, and structural evolution upon oxidation are shown to be collective properties of the pi-network rather than local bonding environments.

Covalency does not suppress O2 formation in 4d and 5d Li-rich O-redox cathodes

Robert A. House et al.

Summary: Recent findings suggest that Li-rich transition metal oxides undergo O-redox, forming molecular oxygen trapped in the particles during oxidation. This phenomenon occurs across 3d, 4d, and 5d transition metal oxides, indicating a greater covalency in the 4d and 5d compounds does not stabilize peroxo-like species. High resolution RIXS and XAS data for Li2IrO3 support a charge compensation mechanism associated primarily with Ir redox without evidence of O-O dimerization.

Metal-Ligand π Interactions in Lithium-Rich Li2RhO3 Cathode Material Activate Bimodal Anionic Redox

By analyzing the orbital combinations of transition metals and oxygen in LROs, it was found that a pi-type oxygen redox mode can be achieved at low voltages, expanding the fundamental theories of anionic redox and providing a new design route for high-capacity cathode materials.
