Insight into Structural Evolution, Active Sites, and Stability of Heterogeneous Electrocatalysts

Shenlong Zhao et al.

Summary: Studying the structure-activity correlations of electrocatalysts is crucial for improving the conversion of electrical to chemical energy. Recent evidence obtained through operando characterization techniques shows that the structural evolution of catalysts, caused by their interaction with electric fields, electrolytes, and reactants/intermediates, leads to the formation of real active sites. It is therefore important to summarize the research advances in structural evolution and envision future developments. In this Minireview, the fundamental concepts associated with structural evolution, the triggers of this evolution, and advanced operando characterizations are discussed. The reversibility of structural evolution in heterogeneous electrocatalysis, with a focus on the oxygen evolution and CO2 reduction reactions, is also highlighted. Finally, the key challenges and opportunities in this exciting field are presented.

Summary: Machine learning is a powerful tool for screening electrocatalytic materials. In this study, the authors integrated machine-learned physical insights with the synthesis of structurally ordered intermetallic nanocrystals to achieve efficient nitrate reduction to ammonia. They discovered that breaking adsorption-energy scaling relations through site-specific Pauli repulsion interactions allows for non-scaling behavior in ordered intermetallics. The authors also synthesized CuPd nanocubes with high performance for nitrate reduction to ammonia.

Sustainable Ammonia Production Processes

Seyedehhoma Ghavam et al.

Summary: Recent studies have focused on finding environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and economically viable production processes for ammonia synthesis due to its importance in agriculture and potential as an energy carrier. However, the commonly used Haber-Bosch process for ammonia production has high greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage. Sustainable hydrogen production methods like water electrolysis coupled with renewable technologies are being explored, but they require large amounts of pretreated water. A comparative life cycle assessment of various ammonia production methods shows that significant GHG emissions or high volumes of water are still present in these technologies.
