An Automated System for Strain Engineering and Straintronics of 2D Materials

Onur Cakiroglu et al.

Summary: This work introduces an automated three-point bending apparatus for studying strain engineering and straintronics in 2D materials. The system is benchmarked by obtaining reproducible strain tuned micro-reflectance, Raman, and photoluminescence spectra for monolayer MoS2, which agree well with literature results. Additionally, the system is used to investigate the piezoresistive effect and strain effect on photoresponse in an MoS2 electrical device. The construction details of the system are provided, and it is anticipated to be easily implemented for studying strain engineering and straintronics in various 2D material systems.

Epitaxial Growth of Ultraflat Bismuthene with Large Topological Band Inversion Enabled by Substrate-Orbital-Filtering Effect

Shuo Sun et al.

Summary: Large-gap QSH systems were successfully fabricated by utilizing the substrate-orbital-filtering effect, which selectively filters Bi pz orbitals to generate pxy orbitals with nonzero magnetic quantum numbers. This strategy provides a general approach for designing large-gap QSH systems and exploring their topology-related physics.

Flexible Plasmonics Using Aluminum and Copper Epitaxial Films on Mica

Le Thi Quynh et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates the growth of aluminum (Al), copper (Cu), gold (Au), and silver (Ag) epitaxial films on two-dimensional muscovite mica substrates using van der Waals heteroepitaxy. The resulting plasmonic metal films on mica offer the ability to design and fabricate controlled plasmonic nanostructures with tunable surface plasmon resonances. The use of these films enables the development of plasmonic sensors and plasmonic color filters with high performance.

Mechanical, Elastic, and Adhesive Properties of Two-Dimensional Materials: From Straining Techniques to State-of-the-Art Local Probe Measurements

Cinzia Di Giorgio et al.

Summary: 2D materials, such as graphene and hBN, have unique properties that allow them to withstand large strains and respond to applied stress. This makes them ideal for investigating mechanical deformations in solid-state systems and developing innovative devices. These materials can be used to transduce nanoscale mechanical deformations into detectable electrical signals, enabling the fabrication of high-performance sensors. Additionally, external stresses can be used to dynamically control the properties of 2D materials, leading to the development of strain-tuneable, fully reconfigurable devices. This review also discusses the potential application of vibrating 2D membranes in nano-electromechanical systems that operate at high frequencies and over a large dynamic range.

Strain engineering in single-, bi- and tri-layer MoS2, MoSe2, WS2 and WSe2

Felix Carrascoso et al.

Summary: This research utilizes strain to modify the optical properties of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides, with a focus on MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2. The study provides detailed technical descriptions for performing uniaxial strain measurements and proposes a calibration method for accurately determining the applied strain. Reflectance spectroscopy is then employed to analyze the strain tunability of electronic properties in single-, bi-, and tri-layer MoS2, MoSe2, WS2, and WSe2, with an assessment of flake-to-flake variability in 15 single-layer MoS2 flakes.

Alwin Daus et al.

Summary: Flexible nanoscale FETs based on 2D semiconductors are fabricated by transferring transition metal dichalcogenides from rigid growth substrates to polyimide films with nano-patterned metal contacts. The approach allows for channel lengths down to 60 nm and on-state currents up to 470 mu A mu m(-1) at a drain-source voltage of 1 V, demonstrating comparable performance to flexible graphene and crystalline silicon FETs.
