Towards high-areal-capacity aqueous zinc-manganese batteries: promoting MnO2 dissolution by redox mediators

Jiafeng Lei et al.

Summary: Researchers introduced a mediator strategy to facilitate MnO2 dissolution and recover 'lost' capacity from exfoliated MnO2, improving cycling stability at high areal capacity. The iodide mediator chemically reduces solid MnO2 to form Mn2+ and oxidizes to tri-iodide (I-3(-)), completing one mediation cycle. This strategy significantly enhances the cycling stability and demonstrates the highest areal capacity achieved for reported Zn-Mn batteries.

Towards a high MnO2 loading and gravimetric capacity from proton-coupled Mn4+/Mn2+ reactions using a 3D free-standing conducting scaffold

Arvinder Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the highly reversible proton-coupled MnIV and MnII conversion in mild aqueous buffered electrolyte using 3D free-standing electrospun CNF electrodes as conductive scaffolds. The experimental results show that the free-standing CNF electrodes can maintain high charge capacity and cycling efficiency even at high MnO2 loading. This combination could be a striking approach for developing high energy efficiency MnO2-based mild aqueous batteries.
