Nanoscale Heterogeneities of Non-Noble Iron-Based Metallic Glasses toward Efficient Water Oxidation at Industrial-Level Current Densities

Zhe Jia et al.

Summary: Scaling up the production of cost-effective electrocatalysts for efficient water splitting at the industrial level is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality. This study presents a flexible freestanding Fe-based metallic glass that can be used as a bifunctional electrode for water splitting. The surface hydroxylation process creates unique structural and chemical heterogeneities, offering various active sites for optimizing each rate-determining step. This alloy design concept is expected to encourage the discovery of more high-performance catalytic materials that can be produced at an industrial scale.

Attractive Electron Delocalization Behavior of FeCoMoPB Amorphous Nanoplates for Highly Efficient Alkaline Water Oxidation

Qianqian Wang et al.

Summary: This study develops a noble-metal-free FeCoMoPB amorphous nanoplate for superior alkaline water oxidation using an amorphous alloy design strategy. Experimental and theoretical results reveal that the chemical complexity of the amorphous nanoplate leads to the formation of multiple active sites, reducing the free energy of the rate-determining step and improving the reaction kinetics. The presence of Mo element also promotes electron redistribution and enhances reaction efficiency.
