Performance of the time-resolved ultra-small-angle X-ray scattering beamline with the Extremely Brilliant Source

Theyencheri Narayanan et al.

Summary: This article describes the new technical features and enhanced performance of the ID02 beamline with the Extremely Brilliant Source (EBS) at the ESRF. The beamline enables static and kinetic investigations of a broad range of systems in different size scales and time ranges. Additionally, it allows for multispeckle X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy measurements and relaxation of collimation conditions, resulting in higher flux throughput and lower background. The article highlights the importance of these developments in enabling structural, dynamic, and kinetic investigations of out-of-equilibrium soft matter and biophysical systems.

3D Tomographic Analysis of the Order-Disorder Interplay in the Pachyrhynchus congestus mirabilis Weevil

Kenza Djeghdi et al.

Summary: The bright colors of Pachyrhynchus weevils are due to complex dielectric nanostructures within their elytral scales. The red scales exhibit a periodic diamond structure, while the blue scales exhibit diamond morphology only on the single scattering unit level with disorder on longer length scales.

Polarization-dependent reflection of I-WP minimal-surface-based photonic crystal

Ryosuke Ohnuki et al.

Summary: Photonic crystals are used by butterflies and weevils for their vibrant coloration. A new photonic crystal, I-WP surface, based on minimal surfaces, has been discovered in a longhorn beetle. The polarization dependence of the reflection from this crystal was investigated, and a similar effect was proposed using colloidal particles.

Obtaining chitin, chitosan and their melanin complexes from insects

Adelya Khayrova et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in insects as a source of valuable biologically active substances. Insects can serve as an alternative source of chitin, which can make up to 40% of their exoskeleton. Chitosan and melanin can synergistically enhance each other's biological activity, providing a wide range of potential applications.

Tailored Disorder in Photonics: Learning from Nature

Maximilian Rothammer et al.

Summary: Traditionally, disorder and photonics have been considered natural adversaries, with designers of optical systems often avoiding disorder in pursuit of perfect designs. However, scientists have discovered that by analyzing and tailoring disorder, it is possible to achieve functionalities beyond what is possible with perfectly ordered systems.

Discovery of I-WP minimal-surface-based photonic crystal in the scale of a longhorn beetle

Yuka Kobayashi et al.

Summary: The study reported the discovery of a photonic crystal based on the I-WP minimal surface on the longhorn beetle. This surface is different from those found on butterfly and weevil scales, and the adjacent photonic crystal domains were observed to share a particular crystal plane as their domain boundary, indicating they were developed as twin crystals.
