Unveiling the structure-property relationship in metastable Heusler compounds by systematic disorder tuning

F. Garmroudi et al.

Summary: The experimental results on disorder-tuned Fe2VAl0.9Si0.1 alloys and realization of metastable A2 structure in bulk Fe2VAl-based alloys provide insights into the structure-property relationship of Heusler compounds. The study shows that increasing disorder leads to a gradual transition from a semimetal/narrow-gap semiconductor to a metal, and the disordered A2 phase exhibits a large anomalous Hall effect due to side-jump scattering of charge carriers at the antisite magnetic moments.

Enhanced anomalous Nernst effects in ferromagnetic materials driven by Weyl nodes

Ilias Samathrakis et al.

Summary: Based on high-throughput first-principles calculations, this study evaluated the anomalous Hall and anomalous Nernst conductivities of 266 transition-metal-based ferromagnetic compounds. The origin of the singular-like behavior of these conductivities was found to be mainly attributed to the appearance of Weyl nodes or nodal lines near the Fermi energy, which can be controlled by external stimuli. Furthermore, an automated construction of Wannier functions with a success rate of 92% enabled accurate evaluation of physical properties such as transport properties using Wannier interpolation.

Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation in on-chip devices

Weinan Zhou et al.

Summary: An unconventional approach to enhance the transverse thermopower by combining magnetic and thermoelectric materials, called Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation (STTG), has been proposed and demonstrated. In this study, we improved on the previously used sample structure to achieve large transverse thermopower in on-chip devices. By depositing polycrystalline Fe-Ga alloy films directly on n-type Si substrates and creating contact holes through SiO(x) layer using microfabrication, we obtained devices with simple structure that clearly exhibited enhancement of transverse thermopower due to STTG.

Spin Hall conductivity and anomalous Hall conductivity in full Heusler compounds

Yimin Ji et al.

Summary: The spin Hall conductivity (SHC) and anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) in approximately 120 full Heusler compounds were calculated using density functional theory in a high-throughput manner. The results showed that the mechanism of SHC and AHC cannot be simply explained by valence electron numbers or atomic weights, but rather depends on the details of the electronic structures, which can only be obtained through calculations. High-throughput calculations were efficient in screening desired materials. According to the present results, Rh2MnAl, Cu2CoSn, Co2MnAl, and Co2MnGa are potential candidates for spintronic materials due to their high SHC and AHC values, which could benefit spin-torque-driven nanodevices.

Thermodynamical and topological properties of metastable Fe3Sn

Chen Shen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermodynamic and topological transport properties of the Fe-Sn system through a combination of experimental data, first-principles calculations, and Calphad assessment. It introduces the metastable phase Fe3Sn into the phase diagram and corrects the phase locations of Fe5Sn3 and Fe3Sn2. It also demonstrates that the enhanced anomalous Hall and Nernst conductivities of Fe3Sn can be tuned by doping Mn and varying magnetization direction.

Tunable eg Orbital Occupancy in Heusler Compounds for Oxygen Evolution Reaction**

Mingquan Yu et al.

Summary: Heusler compounds show potential as a new class of OER electrocatalysts due to their mechanical robustness, metallic conductivity, and tunability in electronic structure. The reactivity of Co sites in these compounds is influenced by the e(g) orbital filling, with higher catalytic activity observed as the filling approaches unity. Further research is needed to fully understand and harness the catalytic performance of Heusler compounds through manipulation of spin orbitals.

Seebeck-driven transverse thermoelectric generation

Weinan Zhou et al.

Summary: This study utilizes the Seebeck effect to drive transverse thermoelectric generation, which shows great potential for energy harvesting and heat sensing applications, especially with the orthogonal geometry in the heat-to-charge current conversion. By hybridizing Seebeck effect and anomalous Hall effect in a closed circuit comprising thermoelectric and magnetic materials, a similar symmetry to the anomalous Nernst effect can be achieved in transverse thermoelectric generation. The Seebeck-effect-driven transverse thermopower is found to be several orders of magnitude larger than the anomalous-Nernst-effect-driven thermopower, indicating a promising unconventional approach for developing applications of transverse thermoelectric generation.

Harish K. Singh et al.

Summary: Through density functional theory calculations, the origin of multifunctional properties for cubic antiperovskites with noncollinear magnetic ground states was elucidated, attributed to strong isotropic and anisotropic magnetostructural coupling. Out of 54 stable magnetic antiperovskites, 14 exhibit antiferromagnetic magnetic configurations driven by frustrated exchange coupling and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy.
