Ultra-Stable Zn Anode Enabled by Fiber-Directed Ion Migration Using Mass-Producible Separator

Lu Yao et al.

Summary: Aqueous zinc-ion battery (AZB) is a promising candidate for next-generation energy storage due to its inherent safety and low cost. However, current AZBs face challenges such as Zn dendrite growth and undesirable side-reactions, resulting in poor cycling stability. To address this issue, researchers have developed a unique separator based on polyacrylonitrile/graphene oxide (PG) composite nanofibers, which effectively regulate the migration and distribution of Zn2+ ions in the separator. The PG separator demonstrates high ionic conductivity and stable performance, providing a potential solution to overcome the limitations of Zn metal anode in AZBs.

Self-Healing and Shape-Editable Wearable Supercapacitors Based on Highly Stretchable Hydrogel Electrolytes

Yizhou Zhao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the development of wearable supercapacitors with repeated shape editability, excellent self-healing capability, and long-term cycling durability by sandwiching hydrogel electrolytes between two electrodes. The use of hydrogel electrolytes with unique cross-linking structures enhances the long-term cycling durability, while the dynamic crosslinking sites stabilize the supercapacitors during charge-discharge processes. The fabricated supercapacitors show high capacitance retention rates and can be repeatedly processed into various shapes without losing capacitance.

Multifunctional MXene-Bonded Transport Network Embedded in Polymer Electrolyte Enables High-Rate and Stable Solid-State Zinc Metal Batteries

Juan Feng et al.

Summary: The concept of multifunctional MXene bonded transport network-embedded poly(vinylidene fluoride co-hexafluoropropylene)/Zn(OTf)(2) solid polymer electrolyte (PH/MXene SPE) is proposed as an all-in-one strategy for designing robust solid polymer electrolyte. Through comprehensive research including density functional theory calculation, simulation, and multiple characterization techniques, the mechanism of the rational designed solid polymer electrolyte on regulating ion transport, interphase chemistry, and zinc deposition is uncovered. The PH/MXene SPE enables ultrastable zinc plating/stripping behavior and demonstrates significantly improved rate performance and cyclic stability in solid-state Zn/VO2 batteries. The unique strategy proposed in this work offers a new insight into solid polymer electrolyte design and the development of high-performance solid-state Zn metal batteries.

Dendrite-free zinc anode enabled by zinc-chelating chemistry

Minghe Luo et al.

Summary: This study utilized a chelating agent, BIS-TRIS, to regulate the solvation sheath structure of Zn2+ in aqueous Zn-ion batteries, restricting Zn2+ 2D diffusion and inhibiting dendrite growth. Partial substitution of water with chelator also suppressed the hydrogen evolution reaction. This strategy led to the achievement of a stable Zn cell and aqueous Zn/MnO2 battery.

Dual Physically Cross-Linked Hydrogels Incorporating Hydrophobic Interactions with Promising Repairability and Ultrahigh Elongation

Xinyao Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, novel dual physically cross-linked (DPC) hydrogels were developed by incorporating cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) or hydrophobized CNC (CNC-C8) into polymers physically cross-linked by hydrophobic forces. The CNC-C8 DPC hydrogels demonstrated stronger tensile strength and excellent elongation compared to the optimum CNC DPC hydrogels, showcasing the enhanced mechanical properties achieved through introduced hydrophobic interactions. Additionally, these DPC hydrogels could be easily repaired with tetrahydrofuran (THF) while maintaining good tensile stress and elongation behaviors.
