Structural Color Production in Melanin-Based Disordered Colloidal Nanoparticle Assemblies in Spherical Confinement

Anvay Patil et al.

Summary: The research reveals that the absorption characteristics of melanin play a significant role in the generation of structural color, and the dispersity of nanoparticle size has a more pronounced impact on optical properties than packing fraction. Furthermore, chemistry-based stratification design allows for a wider range of color generation and finer saturation tuning.

Relationship between Gel Mesh and Particle Size in Determining Nanoparticle Diffusion in Hydrogel Nanocomposites

Paige J. Moncure et al.

Summary: This study measured the diffusion of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether thiol (PEGSH)-functionalized gold nanoparticles (NPs) in polyacrylamide gels with varying cross-linking densities. The results showed that the diffusion coefficients of the NPs primarily depended on the overall hydrodynamic diameter and could be predicted using the confinement ratio calculated from the particle diameter and gel mesh size. The findings provide insights into the factors influencing NP diffusion through polymer gels and will contribute to the development of hydrogel nanocomposites for applications such as drug delivery in viscoelastic biological materials.

Single-Step Synthesis of Alginate Microgels Enveloped with a Covalent Polymeric Shell: A Simple Way to Protect Encapsulated Cells

So Hyun Ahn et al.

Summary: Microgels of biopolymers such as alginate are commonly used for cell encapsulation. By enveloping alginate gels with a thin shell of a covalently cross-linked gel, the microcapsules become more robust and stable under various conditions, enabling long-term viability and functionality of encapsulated cells.

Polymer Nanoparticle-Based Spherical Photonic Pigments for Dye-Free Noniridescent Bright Coloring

Laurinda R. P. Areias et al.

Summary: The study developed colloidal photonic pigments with spherical symmetry, capable of producing colors across the entire visible spectrum by controlling the size of PNPs. By doping with polydopamine nanoparticles, the materials exhibited bright saturated colors with minimal iridescence.

Structural colors of pearls

Ryotaro Ozaki et al.

Summary: The luster of pearls depends on the periodic structures of aragonite crystal layers and conchiolin sheets, with internal light scattering and transmission being key factors in understanding their optical properties. By analyzing the transmission and reflection spectra of pearls using a proposed optical model, predictions can be made about the appearance of pearls with different layer thicknesses, which show good agreement with experimental results. Visual rendering of pearl images can also be achieved using the calculated spectra.

Multilayer tubes that constrict, dilate, and curl in response to stimuli†

Brady C. Zarket et al.

Summary: This article introduces a method for synthesizing responsive multilayer tubes in the laboratory without the need for complex equipment such as a 3D printer. Each layer of the tubes is composed of a polymer gel formed by free-radical polymerization, allowing for precise control over the tube’s structure. The tubes exhibit properties of being robust, flexible, and capable of changing shape in response to external stimuli.
