Edge-Site Engineering of Defective Fe-N4 Nanozymes with Boosted Catalase-Like Performance for Retinal Vasculopathies

Ruofei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study rationally designed an iron-based nanozyme with excellent catalytic performance and demonstrated its potential therapeutic effects on retinal vasculopathies by scavenging ROS and alleviating oxidative stress. The nanozyme showed promising catalase-like activity and provided a new approach for refining nanozymes through engineering the defect environment and geometric structure around metal sites.

Thirty-Year Time Trends in Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema in Youth With Type 1 Diabetes

Digby W. Allen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to examine the trends in diabetic retinopathy (DR) and diabetic macular edema (DME) among adolescents with type 1 diabetes from 1990 to 2019. The results showed that the prevalence of DR decreased over the three decades, while the prevalence of DME remained relatively stable. Factors associated with DR and DME included injection frequency, age, glycemic control, duration of diabetes, overweight/obesity, and blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolomic and lipidomic characteristics of plasma in patients with diabetic retinopathy (DR). The results showed significant alterations in metabolites and lipids in the plasma of DR patients. These changes were associated with the development of diabetic retinopathy and could serve as potential therapeutic targets.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) value and contrast sensitivity (CS) in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and no diabetic retinopathy (DR). The results showed that CS was inversely associated with diabetes duration and HbA1c values.

Hypoxia and hypoxia-inducible factors in diabetes and its complications

Sergiu-Bogdan Catrina et al.

Summary: HIFs regulate oxygen homeostasis, and insufficient activation of HIF signaling in diabetes impairs adaptive responses to hypoxia, due to inhibition of HIF-1 alpha stability and function by high glucose and elevated fatty acid levels. Targeting HIF signaling has potential for preventing and treating diabetes and related complications.

Role of Oxidative Stress and Severity of Diabetic Retinopathy in Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes

Kholoud Bokhary et al.

Summary: This study showed that diabetic patients have lower levels of antioxidant enzymes compared to non-diabetic individuals, with a positive correlation between HbA1C levels and DR severity. Levels of SOD and CAT varied significantly with DR severity and were found to decrease with DR progression. Oxidative stress and decreased antioxidant defenses are associated with the progression of DR to its proliferative stage.

Recent trends in drug-delivery systems for the treatment of diabetic retinopathy and associated fibrosis

Marta Silva et al.

Summary: Diabetic retinopathy is a common complication of diabetes, with challenges in treatment due to the low bioavailability of drugs at the target site in the eye, requiring long-term and frequent injections. Efforts have been made in recent years to develop new drug delivery platforms to enhance permeation, prolong retention time, and provide sustained release to reduce toxicity and improve efficacy.
