The role of ROS in tumour development and progression

Eric C. Cheung et al.

Summary: Eukaryotic cells have complex systems to regulate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which are deregulated in cancer cells. ROS also modulate the tumor environment and affect stromal cells supporting metabolism, blood supply, and immune responses. The response to ROS is complex and depends on multiple factors, including ROS characteristics and tumor characteristics. Understanding the complexity of ROS in cancers is key to developing ROS-targeting therapies for cancer treatment.

Design and application of metal-organic frameworks and derivatives as heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts for organic wastewater treatment: A review

Sen Lu et al.

Summary: This review focuses on clarifying the critical mechanism of center dot OH production from MOFs and derivatives as well as its action on the organic's degradation process. The recent developments in MOF based HFOP are compared, and more attention is paid for the following aspects in this review: (1) systematically classifying progressive modification methods of MOFs by chemical and physical treatments; (2) analyzing the fate of catalytic species during treating organic wastewater; (3) proposing design ideas and principles for improving the performance of MOFs catalysts; (4) discussing the main factors influencing the catalytic properties and practical application; (5) summarizing the possible research challenges and directions for MOFs and their derivatives as catalysts applied to wastewater treatment in the future.

Cu-Ferrocene-Functionalized CaO2 Nanoparticles to Enable Tumor-Specific Synergistic Therapy with GSH Depletion and Calcium Overload

Hanjing Kong et al.

Summary: The study successfully designed and synthesized fine CaO2 nanoparticles with Cu-ferrocene molecules on the surface, which release Ca2+ ions and H2O2 under acidic conditions and promote the production of (OH)-O-center dot. The enhanced (OH)-O-center dot induction and intracellular calcium overload contribute significantly to antitumor effects in vitro and in vivo.

Hydroxychloroquine Induces Apoptosis in Cholangiocarcinoma via Reactive Oxygen Species Accumulation Induced by Autophagy Inhibition

Jiaqi Chen et al.

Summary: Despite efforts to improve treatment for cholangiocarcinoma, the long-term survival rate remains poor. HCQ, an antimalarial drug, inhibits autophagy and shows therapeutic effects on various cancers. In this study, HCQ effectively suppressed cholangiocarcinoma by inhibiting autophagy, inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest through ROS accumulation.

ATIC inhibits autophagy in hepatocellular cancer through the AKT/FOXO3 pathway and serves as a prognostic signature for modeling patient survival

Hao Zhang et al.

Summary: The study identified the correlation between autophagy-related genes and the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma patients, and established a reliable prognostic model based on 12 genes. This model can effectively predict patients' survival time, reflecting their immune characteristics and status. Furthermore, ATIC inhibits autophagy and promotes the progression of liver cancer through the AKT/FOXO3 signaling pathway.
