Single and repeated low-velocity impact response of E-glass fiber-reinforced epoxy and polypropylene composites for different impactor shapes

Akar Dogan

Summary: This study investigates the low-velocity impact response of thermoset and thermoplastic matrix-based composites, focusing on the effects of impactor shapes and fiber volumetric ratio. The results show that thermoplastic composites have higher perforation thresholds compared to thermoset composites under the same impact energy. The shape of the impactor significantly affects the perforation threshold, with the conical impactor showing a dramatic reduction in the impact number causing perforation. The fiber volumetric ratio also has a significant effect on the impact resistance.

Damage prediction of thick composite laminates subjected to low-velocity impact loads

Dong-Kuk Choi et al.

Summary: Experimental and numerical studies were conducted to predict the behavior of composite laminates under low-velocity impact loads. A numerical model with shell elements was used to efficiently simulate the laminates, and a strain-based failure theory was employed to predict the damaged area. The results were verified through drop-weight impact tests and ultrasonic C-scan inspections.

Multi-impact behaviour of composite laminates under constant and different energy levels

P. N. B. Reis et al.

Summary: This study investigates the multi-impact behavior of composite laminates and finds that the damaged area increases with higher impact energy levels, resulting in higher impact loads, displacement, and impact bending stiffness. The number of impacts to failure follows an inverse relationship with the impact energy. However, the experimental results do not agree with the estimated lives based on Palmgren-Miner's Law.

Impact fatigue, multiple and repeated low-velocity impacts on FRP composites: A review

Mojtaba Sadighi et al.

Summary: The paper reviews experimental evidence related to impact fatigue, multiple impacts, and repeated impacts on FRP composites, along with discussions on theoretical and numerical simulations, proposing a new terminology and definition. Experimental investigations in terms of impact energy and number of impacts are categorized, with consideration of various parameters to understand their effects on FRP laminates during repeated impacts. Discussion of reported results is provided, along with recommendations for future explorations to fill knowledge gaps.

Performance comparison of resin-infused thermoplastic and thermoset 3D fabric composites under impact loading

S. Z. H. Shah et al.

Summary: The impact performance of a novel 3D-FRC composite with a resin-infused acrylic thermoplastic matrix was evaluated and compared with thermoset-based 3D-FRC. Results showed that thermoplastic-based 3D-FRC exhibited higher impact load-bearing capacity and less damage area in single impact tests, and better structural integrity and less damaged area in recurring strike tests. The superior impact resistance of thermoplastic-based 3D-FRC is attributed to their higher interlaminar fracture toughness, tougher fiber-matrix interface, matrix ductility, and unique failure mechanism of yarn straining.

Progressive damage modelling and fatigue life prediction of Plain-weave composite laminates with Low-velocity impact damage

Zheng-Qiang Cheng et al.

Summary: A fatigue-driven residual strength model considering the effects of low-velocity impact (LVI) damage and stress ratio was developed in this paper. New fatigue failure criteria were proposed based on this model, which can simulate fatigue damage growth and predict fatigue life for composite laminates with LVI damage. Experimental results showed that LVI damage degrades fatigue strength drastically and the load history plays an important role in fatigue accumulation damage for post-impact laminates.

Numerical study on the dynamic progressive failure due to low-velocity repeated impacts in thin CFRP laminated composite plates

M. Rezasefat et al.

Summary: This paper numerically investigates the mechanical response of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) plates subjected to repeated low-velocity impacts. The numerical models are validated using experimental data obtained from impact tests on CFRP plates, showing that most of the intra-laminar and interlaminar damage is limited to a few initial impacts.

An evaluation of Cuntze and Puck inter fibre failure criteria in simulation of thin CFRP plates subjected to low velocity impact

M. Rezasefat et al.

Summary: This study implemented and evaluated a continuum damage mechanics-based material model to predict the damage and mechanical response of carbon fibre reinforced polymer composites under low velocity impact. The use of both Cuntze and Puck failure criteria, along with a novel approach to search for the fracture angle, demonstrated efficient and accurate prediction of the matrix damage caused by low velocity impact. The simpler failure model of Cuntze proved to be more preferable for explicit simulations due to reduced computational time.

Summary: This study aimed to predict impact failure behavior of cylindrical CFRPs using multiscale analyses with consideration of strain-rate dependence. While the fracture process analysis results did not match test results, there was good agreement between analysis results and test results in terms of failure strength, load, and failure point.
