Alcohol consumption trajectories over the Australian life course

Geoffrey Leggat et al.

Summary: This study analyzed survey data from Australia to examine alcohol consumption patterns over the life course. The findings suggest that alcohol consumption varies significantly, with higher quantity and frequency of drinking observed in early adulthood, and higher daily consumption and frequency of drinking in middle age.

Alcohol-Induced Death in the USA from 1999 to 2020: a Comparison of Age-Period-Cohort Methods

Katherine M. Keyes et al.

Summary: This study compared four different age-period-cohort models for alcohol-induced death in the USA from 1999 to 2020 and found that alcohol-induced death peaked between ages 45 and 60 in the USA with a positive period effect. There were differences across models in the presence and magnitude of cohort effects. The emerging evidence suggests an increased burden of alcohol-induced mortality for those born in the 1970s-1980s as they enter the age band of highest risk.

Changing prevalence of aetiological factors and comorbidities among Australians hospitalised for cirrhosis

Patricia C. Valery et al.

Summary: The study found that alcohol misuse remains the most important cause of cirrhosis, while the prevalence of NAFLD/NASH, cryptogenic cirrhosis, and comorbid type 2 diabetes has been increasing. This highlights the need for public health interventions to address the burden of unhealthy lifestyle choices and metabolic disorders in patients admitted for cirrhosis.

Trends in adolescent drinking across 39 high-income countries: exploring the timing and magnitude of decline

Rakhi Vashishtha et al.

Summary: The decline in adolescent alcohol consumption varies greatly in timing and extent across different countries, with Northern European countries and the UK showing the steepest decline and Eastern and Southern European countries showing the shallowest decline. This suggests that efforts to explain recent trends in adolescent drinking should consider factors specific to countries and regions.

The role of alcohol use in the aetiology and progression of liver disease: A narrative review and a quantification

Jurgen Rehm et al.

Summary: Alcohol use has been shown to impact various forms of liver disease, causing a significant number of incident cases and deaths. This additional disease burden, often in interaction with other risk factors, is not currently reflected in the classification of alcoholic liver disease. Clinical work and prevention policies need to take this into consideration.
