Respiratory and haemodynamic effects of 6h-pronation in neonates recovering from respiratory distress syndrome, or affected by acute respiratory distress syndrome or evolving bronchopulmonary dysplasia: a prospective, physiological, crossover, controlled cohort study

Barbara Loi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the effectiveness of pronation for neonates with respiratory failure. The results showed that pronation improved gas exchange and lung ventilation, and has promising clinical applications. This is of great significance for the treatment of neonates with respiratory failure.

Enhanced INSURE (ENSURE): an updated and standardised reference for surfactant administration

Feriel Fortas et al.

Summary: There is no firm consensus on the optimal technique for administering exogenous surfactant in preterm neonates. The INSURE procedure has not been fully described, leading to significant clinical practice variations. ENSURE is proposed as an updated and standardized technique for surfactant administration, suitable for clinical practice, teaching, and research.

Epidemiology of Neonatal Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome: Prospective, Multicenter, International Cohort Study

Daniele De Luca et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the epidemiology, clinical course, treatment, and outcomes of neonatal ARDS. The prevalence and survival of neonatal ARDS were found to be similar to pediatric ARDS. Different subtypes of neonatal ARDS may have distinct clinical outcomes and a different distribution among term and preterm neonates.

Bile acid-induced lung injury: update of reverse translational biology

Daniele De Luca et al.

Summary: The presence of bile acids in lung tissue is associated with clinical features and can cause lung injury. Understanding the mechanisms of bile acid-induced lung injury is important for therapeutic applications. The mechanisms include interaction with the secretory phospholipase A2 pathway, effects on surfactant function and structure, biological effects on inflammation and local immunity, and direct cellular toxicity. Further research is needed to improve our understanding of these processes.

Point-of-care lung ultrasound in neonatology: classification into descriptive and functional applications

Francesco Raimondi et al.

Summary: This review discusses the application of lung ultrasound in neonatology, including descriptive and functional uses. The proposed SAFE protocol for emergency functional LUS in critical neonates is highlighted, with potential future development linked to quantitative evaluation and computer-aided diagnostic techniques. Opportunities for teaching LUS and expanding the research network are also briefly presented.
