Kan Ye et al.

Summary: In this study, an origami-inspired vibration isolator with quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) property is proposed using a truss-spring based stack Miura-ori (TS-SMO) structure. The unique structure uses coil spring sets to replace deformable creases, improving physical realization in engineering applications. Nonlinear force response and QZS feature are achieved through geometric nonlinearity and specific Poisson's ratio profile, with isolation performance discussed under variable viscous damping effects.

On the detailed design of a quasi-zero stiffness device to assist in the realisation of a translational Lanchester damper

G. Gatti et al.

Summary: A translational Lanchester damper adds damping to a structure using a combination of viscous damper and mass, but achieving low stiffness for the device is crucial to behave like a Lanchester damper rather than a dynamic vibration absorber. By utilizing a specific geometry with linear springs and rigid links, the device is able to maintain linear-like behavior despite its inherent nonlinearity. The study on how geometry affects the nonlinear behavior provides general guidelines for design, and a prototype incorporating the low stiffness element has been successfully tested on vibrating structures.

Design of a metastructure for vibration isolation with quasi-zero-stiffness characteristics using bistable curved beam

Srajan Dalela et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a metastructure-based vibration isolation model with high static and low dynamic stiffness properties to enhance isolation effectiveness of small-scale equipment under low-frequency excitations. The quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) effect is achieved through the snap-through behavior of cosine beam systems and bending-dominated behavior of semicircular arches within each unit cell. Analytical and numerical studies as well as experimental validation confirm the static and dynamic characteristics of the proposed metastructure, showing lower transmissibility and wider isolation range compared to a linear model. The parametric study reveals that motion transmissibility decreases with decreasing damping ratio in the low-frequency region, while increasing damping ratio leads to wider effective isolation range. Stability analysis shows the unstable region in the frequency response curve reduces with higher damping ratio and is independent of excitation amplitude.

A non-smooth quasi-zero-stiffness isolator with displacement constraints

Rong Zeng et al.

Summary: This paper designs a double-layer quasi-zero-stiffness (QZS) vibration isolator with displacement constraints to reduce large-amplitude vibration. The mechanical model of the isolator is established based on Hertz's contact model (DLQZS-HCM) and the vibration isolation performance is examined theoretically using the incremental harmonic balance method. The results show that the DLQZS-HCM isolator performs better than double-layer linear isolator (DLL) and double-layer QZS isolator (DLQZS) in extending the frequency range of vibration isolation and decreasing peak transmissibility under large-amplitude excitation. Feedback control is also applied to further enhance the isolation performance at low-frequency levels.

Summary: The motion of a forced vibro-impacting incline energy harvester is investigated in parameter regimes with asymmetry in the number of impacts on the bottom and top. Semi-analytical expressions for asymmetric periodic motion with a ratio of 2:1 for impacts on the device bottom and top are obtained, derived through nonlinear maps and impact conditions. Bifurcation diagrams and linear stability analysis validate the numerical solutions for asymmetric motions with different incline angles.

Enhanced vibration isolation performance of quasi-zero-stiffness isolator by introducing tunable nonlinear inerter

Summary: This paper focuses on enhancing the QZS isolator by introducing tunable nonlinear inerter (TNI) to improve low-frequency isolation performance. Analytical calculations, stability analysis, and numerical simulations were conducted to compare the isolation performances of the QZS isolator and the QZS-TNI isolator. Results show that adding the inerter considerably suppresses the bending trend of the transmissibility curve, leading to a wider frequency range of isolation and a lower peak transmissibility.
