A Snake-Inspired Layer-Driven Continuum Robot

Guodong Qin et al.

Summary: This study presents the development of a snake-inspired continuum robot with underactuated continuum joints simulating the morphological skeleton structure of a snake body. The layered-drive principle reduces complexity significantly, and the rationality of the snake-inspired robot is verified through static and dynamic characteristics analysis.

A novel multi-layer isolation structure for transverse stabilization inspired by neck structure

Xiuting Sun et al.

Summary: A novel multi-layer structure with nonlinear elastic components is proposed in this paper to stabilize the head from body movements and external vibration. The structure is capable of loading weight and isolating bending vibration, providing solutions for car sickness and having potential applications in mechanical arm and satellite sensors.

A resonant squid-inspired robot unlocks biological propulsive efficiency

Thierry Bujard et al.

Summary: This study identified the pulse-jet propulsion mode used by animals like squid and jellyfish as a coupled mass-spring-mass oscillator, allowing for the design of a flexible self-propelled robot. Experimental results showed that resonance greatly benefits pulse-jet swimming speed and efficiency, with the robot matching the optimal cost of transport of the most efficient biological swimmers in nature. The robot also displayed a preferred Strouhal number for efficient swimming, bridging the gap between pulse-jet propulsion and findings in efficient fish swimming.

Self-powered soft robot in the Mariana Trench

Guorui Li et al.

Summary: The deep sea, with its high pressure, remains a challenge to explore, but certain deep-sea creatures are able to thrive at extreme depths. By integrating electronics in a silicone matrix, we developed an untethered soft robot for deep-sea exploration, showcasing the potential of designing soft, lightweight devices for extreme conditions.

Study on the Structural Characteristics of Bird Necks and Their Static Motion Features in the Sagittal Plane

Jiajia Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between structural parameters and motion characteristics of birds' necks using tomography and 3D reconstruction technology. The results show that geese and ducks have similar structural characteristics but significant differences in joint motion characteristics. Geese achieve complex neck postures through active intervertebral joints and highly flexible facet joints, resulting in a higher neck flexibility compared to ducks.

Biomechanical modeling of metal screw loadings on the human vertebra

Leonardo Molinari et al.

Summary: The study investigated the advantages of using angled screw insertion during spinal fusion surgery through finite element analysis, as well as the impact of different screw insertion angles on bone stress concentration and screw stability. Numerical investigation showed that the caudomedial trajectory can significantly reduce stress concentration, improving the clinical outcomes of the surgery.
