Fine microstructure formation in steel under ultrafast heating and cooling

Mitsuharu Yonemura et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the phase transformation kinetics under ultrafast cooling using femtosecond X-ray diffraction and measures dislocation densities in Fe-0.1 mass% C-2.0 mass% Mn martensitic steel. The results show that the cooling rate affects the dislocation density of the gamma phase and leads to the formation of retained gamma during ultrafast cooling. The study also discovers that Fe-0.1 mass% C-2.0 mass% Mn martensitic steels may have an intermediate phase during the phase transformation and lattice softening occurs in carbon steel above the martensitic-transformation starting temperature.

Mechanism of subsurface microstructural fatigue crack initiation during high and very-high cycle fatigue of advanced bainitic steels

Guhui Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fatigue crack initiation behavior of advanced bainitic steels during high cycle fatigue/very high cycle fatigue regimes and the role of retained austenite in crack initiation and propagation. The study identifies multiple micro-mechanisms responsible for fatigue crack initiation and discusses the formation of fine grains that assist crack advancement. The findings provide insights into the cyclic response of multiphase structures and the mechanisms of fatigue crack initiation during very high cycle fatigue.

The role of carbon in the white etching crack phenomenon in bearing steels

D. Mayweg et al.

Summary: The white etching crack (WEC) phenomena in high carbon steels affect bearings, and research shows that it is associated with the carbon element. Analyzing the carbon content and distribution in 100Cr6 bearings can provide insights into the formation mechanism of white etching cracks.

Study on fatigue wear competition mechanism and microstructure evolution on the surface of a bainitic steel rail

Ruijie Zhang et al.

Summary: The study on the wear and fatigue competition mechanism of a bainitic rail steel revealed that the damage process could be divided into initial, middle, and late stages, with dominant damage mechanisms of wear, wear and fatigue, and fatigue respectively. As rolling cycles increased, retained austenite transformation played a crucial role in achieving dynamic equilibrium between wear and fatigue, effectively controlling the excessive propagation of fatigue cracks.

Under-stoichiometric cementite in decomposing binary Fe-C pearlite exposed to rolling contact fatigue

P-Y Tung et al.

Summary: This study investigates the deformation-driven cementite decomposition during rolling contact fatigue in a binary steel. Nano-scale mechanisms are revealed through transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography. The results show that slip transmission across cementite lamellae is primarily responsible for carbon depletion in cementite, leading to the formation of under-stoichiometric cementite through combined slip transmission and solute drag by dislocations.

Summary: The study investigated the possibility of improving the mechanical and wear performance of steel rails through a two-step heat treatment method, which eliminated the remaining austenite and obtained a refined bainite-ferrite microstructure. This treatment significantly increased mechanical properties and wear resistance of the rails.

Reactive wear protection through strong and deformable oxide nanocomposite surfaces

Chang Liu et al.

Summary: The authors present a 'reactive wear protection' strategy to achieve superior wear resistance through the in situ formation of strong and deformable oxide nanocomposites on a surface induced by friction. This strategy offers a pathway for designing ultra-wear resistant alloys by turning brittle oxides into strong and deformable surfaces for improving wear resistance.
