Phase decomposition and strengthening in HfNbTaTiZr high entropy alloy from first-principles calculations

Shu-Ming Chen et al.

Summary: Phase decomposition significantly affects the mechanical properties of high entropy alloys (HEAs). In this study, we successfully predicted the phase decomposition of the Hf-Nb-Ta-Ti-Zr alloy by combining first-principles methods and thermodynamic models. The predicted results are in good agreement with experiments and simulations, and reveal the influence of phase decomposition on the strength of the alloy.

Strengthening mechanisms and microstructural evolution of ductile refractory medium-entropy alloy Hf20Nb10Ti35Zr35

I-An Su et al.

Summary: The metastable beta-type medium-entropy refractory alloy Hf20Nb10Ti35Zr35 was designed to have a ductile BCC structure in the as-solution-treated state and aged to achieve a combination of strength and ductility. The strengthening mechanisms, including transformation-induced plasticity, twinning-induced plasticity, and precipitation strengthening, serve as a basis for alloy design and improving the mechanical properties.

Ultrastrong and ductile BCC high-entropy alloys with low-density via dislocation regulation and nanoprecipitates

Xuehui Yan et al.

Summary: Extraordinary strength and good tensile ductility are achieved in (Zr0.5Ti0.35Nb0.15)(100-x)Al-x alloys at room temperature. The relatively low densities exhibited in these alloys make them attractive structural materials. Designing nanoprecipitates and diversifying dislocation motions play key roles in achieving such breakthrough.

Dislocation glide and mechanical twinning in a ductile VNbTi medium entropy alloy

Mingxu Wu et al.

Summary: An equiatomic VNbTi medium-entropy alloy with outstanding tensile properties and unique deformation behavior has been reported. The alloy exhibits three deformation mechanisms - screw dislocation glide, deformation twinning, and dislocation accumulation induced kink bands, which contribute to a large elongation above 20%. The activation of twin bands and kink bands impedes dislocation motion and alleviates stress concentration, providing opportunities for designing ductile refractory medium- and high-entropy alloys.

On cooling rates dependence of microstructure and mechanical properties of refractory high-entropy alloys HfTaTiZr and HfNbTiZr

Hailong Huang et al.

Summary: This study extensively investigated the phase stability of high entropy alloys (HEAs) at intermediate temperatures and found that the effect of cooling rates on refractory HEAs depends on the alloy composition and material properties. This provides a new approach for optimizing the properties of HEAs.

Cross-kink unpinning controls the medium- to high-temperature strength of body-centered cubic NbTiZr medium-entropy alloy

Rajeshwar R. Eleti et al.

Summary: The deformation mechanisms of a NbTiZr body-centered cubic (BCC) medium-entropy alloy (MEA) were investigated by tensile testing at different temperatures. It was found that the alloy deformation is controlled by screw-dislocation slip, with cross-kinks/jogs observed frequently at most temperatures. At higher temperatures, the dominance of cross-kink strengthening leads to a temperature insensitive yield strength, while the disappearance of cross-kinks/edge dipoles above 1073 K results in a strength drop.

Remarkably high fracture toughness of HfNbTaTiZr refractory high-entropy alloy

X. J. Fan et al.

Summary: The BCC HfNbTaTiZr refractory HEA exhibits remarkable fracture toughness in addition to its high strength, good tensile ductility, and excellent high-temperature properties. This material shows promise for applications in high-temperature structural materials such as in the aerospace field.

Correlations to improve room temperature ductility of refractory complex concentrated alloys

O. N. Senkov et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the room temperature tensile and compressive properties of refractory complex, concentrated alloys (RCCAs) to explore correlations capable of anticipating ductility in this class of structural materials. A new ductility criterion based on the RCCA yield strength was suggested, but more data and research are needed to support this trend. Predictive models for estimating the yield strength in RCCAs could help identify alloys with usable levels of ductility.

Spinodal-modulated solid solution delivers a strong and ductile refractory high-entropy alloy

Zibing An et al.

Summary: A new strategy is demonstrated to achieve ductile BCC HfNbTiV by decomposing the BCC arrangement into two different phases via spinodal decomposition, resulting in chemical composition modulations and elastic strain on a length scale of a few tens of nanometers. The periodically spaced beta* with large lattice distortion is particularly effective in hindering dislocation movement, leading to strain hardening and enhancing plastic strain delocalization, ultimately achieving high yield strength and tensile strain to failure.
