Vacancy formation energies and migration barriers in multi-principal element alloys

Ankit Roy et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability and diffusion barriers of vacancies in high-temperature alloys using density-functional theory and finds that local lattice distortion caused by charge-transfer between neighboring atoms in different chemical environments strongly affects the stability and barriers. The study suggests that (Ti, Zr) elements are more likely to diffuse than (Mo, W) elements under irradiation, indicating the potential for controlling material degradation through tuning the composition of alloying elements.

Elemental effects on the oxidation of refractory compositionally complex alloys

Summary: This study systematically investigates the effects of Al, Cr, Mo, Nb, Ta, Ti, V, and Zr elements on the oxidation of RCCAs. It is found that Al, Cr, and Ti can enhance the oxidation resistance of RCCAs, while Zr and V result in severe internal oxidation. Mo is effective in suppressing internal oxidation, but forms non-protective compounds. Ta is more beneficial for reducing the oxidation mass gain.

Current Status of Research on the Oxidation Behavior of Refractory High Entropy Alloys

Bronislava Gorr et al.

Summary: Refractory high entropy alloys (RHEA) are emerging as promising high-temperature materials for structural applications due to their attractive mechanical properties, but concerns have been raised about their oxidation behavior, with some exhibiting good protectiveness attributed to the formation of protective oxides.

Enhanced oxidation resistance of (Mo95W5)85Ta10 (TiZr)5 refractory multi-principal element alloy up to 1300°C

Ranran Su et al.

Summary: This study explores a two-step coating process for an innovative refractory multi-principal element alloy, demonstrating enhanced oxidation resistance at high temperatures and stable operation at 10-20% higher temperatures without forced cooling. The coating, consisting of an aluminoborosilica glass layer and RMPEA-Si-B multilayered structure, effectively protects the substrate and maintains coating integrity through borides acting as a barrier layer.

Oxidation mechanism of refractory high entropy alloys Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-Al with varying Ta content

S. Schellert et al.

Summary: The oxidation resistance of alloys Ta-x-(Mo-Cr-Ti-Al)(1-x) in air at 1200 degrees C is improved with increasing Ta concentration. However, alloys with Ta concentrations less than or equal to 10 at% exhibit poor oxidation behavior. Protective CrTaO4 scales are found in alloys containing 15 and 20 at% Ta.

The Effect of Al on the Formation of a CrTaO4 Layer in Refractory High Entropy Alloys Ta-Mo-Cr-Ti-xAl

S. Schellert et al.

Summary: The study found that the high temperature oxidation of Al-containing refractory high entropy alloys (RHEAs) is significantly influenced by the Al content. Lower Al concentrations are affected by the formation of other oxidation products, while higher Al concentrations result in relatively thin oxide scales and internal corrosion zones. Low Al concentrations lead to thick and porous oxide scales.

Summary: Refractory high-entropy alloys (RHEAs) are unique due to their high-temperature strength, oxidation resistance, and corrosion resistance, potentially replacing Ni-based superalloys. Various manufacturing processes and alloying elements affect the properties of RHEAs.
