The Complicated Relationship between Dieting, Dietary Restraint, Caloric Restriction, and Eating Disorders: Is a Shift in Public Health Messaging Warranted?

Tiffany M. Stewart et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the origins of theories specifying dietary restraint as a cause of eating disorders and provides a brief historical review of supporting evidence. Recent research, including NIH-sponsored randomized controlled trials, suggests that caloric restriction can lead to increased dietary restraint without increasing symptoms of eating disorders. These findings have implications for revising dietary restraint theory and changing public health messaging related to dieting.

Adverse childhood experiences among a treatment-seeking sample of adults with eating disorders

Renee D. Rienecke et al.

Summary: This study examined the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) among adults with eating disorders (EDs) and their impact on treatment outcomes. The results showed that female patients reported higher ACEs, and most diagnoses were associated with higher ACEs. Higher ACEs were associated with a decrease in binge eating scores during treatment, but had no association with changes in purging or restricting behaviors.

Demystifying 'diet culture': Exploring the meaning of diet culture in online 'anti-diet' feminist, fat activist, and health professional communities

Natalie Jovanovski et al.

Summary: The social aspects of dieting have been discussed in existing feminist literature. However, the meaning of 'diet culture' has not yet been investigated comprehensively in academic studies. Through thematic analysis, we found that the 'anti-diet movement' challenges norms associated with 'diet culture' and can be used to unite feminist researchers, activists, and health professionals.
