Encoding bacterial colonization and therapeutic modality by wrapping with an adhesive drug-loadable nanocoating

Huilong Luo et al.

Summary: Wrapping bacterial cells with an adhesive drug-loadable nanocoating allows for the encoding of bacterial colonization and therapeutic modality. Encoded bacteria can colonize a wide range of biointerfaces and carry various cargoes for multimodal therapy. In vivo studies demonstrate that orally ingested encoded bacteria exhibit significantly improved intestinal colonization and synergistically enhanced treatment efficacy. This work reveals a versatile platform for advanced microbial therapy through the encoding of bacterial colonization and modality with a single-cell coating.

One-Step Assembly of Versatile Multifunctional Coatings Based on Host-Guest and Polyphenol Chemistry

Lulu Han et al.

Summary: This study reports a one-step assembly strategy for constructing novel tannic acid (TA) coatings via a solvent evaporation method, using TA and polycyclodextrin (PCD) particles (TPP). The resulting TPP coating (TPC) has high adhesion properties and can be rapidly assembled on various substrates within 1 hour, with a high availability of feed TPP. TPC exhibits high-temperature steam sensitivity and pH-sensitivity, and can incorporate various metal ions and functional particles to enhance its antibacterial activity, stability, and conductivity.

Advances in extrusion-dripping encapsulation of probiotics and omega-3 rich oils

Marjia Sultana et al.

Summary: This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of extrusion technology in the food industry and the viability of probiotics and stability of omega-3 rich oils encapsulated using this technique. The findings suggest that probiotics encapsulated by extrusion process have satisfactory survival rates, while there is insufficient evidence to support the stabilization effects of encapsulated omega-3 rich oils. Co-encapsulation of multiple bioactives has been found to enhance the viability of probiotics and oxidative stability of omega-3 rich oils.

E. coli enhance colonization resistance against Salmonella Typhimurium by competing for galactitol, a context-dependent limiting carbon source

Claudia Eberl et al.

Summary: The composition of the intrinsic microbial communities plays a crucial role in determining whether invading pathogens can establish colonization or be blocked by commensal bacteria. This study found that E. coli can provide colonization resistance against Salmonella Typhimurium by depleting specific carbon sources in a microbial context that supports the removal of simple sugars from the intestine. In certain cases, the presence of other bacterial groups is essential for the colonization resistance mediated by commensal E. coli.
