Formation of porous ice frameworks at room temperature

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: Through molecular dynamics simulations, we demonstrated the spontaneous formation of ultralow-density porous ices with upright channels from liquid water at 300 K with the assistance of carbon nanotube arrays under oxygen negative pressure. These porous ice polymorphs, referred to as water oxygen-vertex frameworks (WOFs), exhibit unique structural features and a first-order phase transition. A comprehensive phase diagram of the WOFs was constructed based on density functional theory calculations, showing their thermodynamic and thermal stabilities under negative pressures.
