Advances in Ultra-small Fluorescence Nanoprobes for Detection of Metal Ions, Drugs, Pesticides and Biomarkers

Mehul R. Kateshiya et al.

Summary: Identification of trace level chemical species plays a key role in environmental monitoring. Recent advances in fluorescence assay have enabled the detection of trace level drugs, pesticides, metal ions, and biomarkers in real samples. The integration of ultra-small nanostructure materials with fluorescence spectrometer has been developed for sensitive and selective analysis of trace level target analytes. This review summarizes the properties and fabrication of metal nanoclusters, quantum dots, and carbon dots, and discusses the advances and challenges of using ultra-small fluorescent nanosensors for sensing various target analytes in real samples.

Unveiling the Antibacterial Mechanism of Gold Nanoclusters via In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy

Jui-Chi Kuo et al.

Summary: Metal nanoclusters have unique properties that make them emerging nanoantibiotics for fighting bacterial infections. Gold nanoclusters, when applied as antibacterial agents, have been shown to destroy bacterial membranes by inducing intracellular reactive oxygen species generation, ultimately leading to bacterial death.

Effect of protein adsorption on the dissolution kinetics of silica nanoparticles

Muhammad Saad Ali et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dissolution behavior of silica nanoparticles in the presence of a model protein bovine serum albumin (BSA) under physiological conditions. The presence of the protein enhances the dissolution kinetics of the nanoparticles due to interactions between positively charged amino acids in the protein and the negatively charged silica surface.

Ternary Biocidal-Photocatalytic-Upconverting Nanocomposites for Enhanced Antibacterial Activity

Mingyue Zhang et al.

Summary: Active antibacterial food packaging is one of the rapidly developing techniques in the food industry. Ternary nanocomposites composed of metallic silver, photocatalytic titanium dioxide, and upconverting nanocrystals have shown superior antibacterial performance under ambient light and without the need for UV irradiation. These multifunctional nanocomposites have the potential to reduce the use of toxic silver and can be applied in food packaging.

Do Iron Oxide Nanoparticles Have Significant Antibacterial Properties?

Sergey V. Gudkov et al.

Summary: The use of iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) shows promise in overcoming antibiotic resistance in bacteria, with studies demonstrating their antimicrobial effects on Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria as well as fungi. IONPs also exhibit low toxicity to eukaryotic cells, making them potential antimicrobial agents with high biocompatibility.
