Ultrafast Macroscopic Assembly of High-Strength Graphene Oxide Membranes by Implanting an Interlaminar Superhydrophilic Aisle

Zhe Wang et al.

Summary: By implanting superhydrophilic cobalt-based metal-organic framework nanosheets into the interlaminar space of graphene oxide (GO) sheets, a high-strength macroscopic membrane with tunable thickness can be prepared quickly. The interlayered hydrophilicity plays a decisive role in the assembly of GO membranes.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of shear processing on the electrochemical performance of 2D nanomaterial-based electrodes. It is found that high shear rate during processing can induce ordered structures in the electrodes, leading to improved pseudocapacitive kinetics. These findings highlight the importance of electrode processing for large-scale manufacturing of 2D nanomaterials.

Multiscale Charge Transport in van der Waals Thin Films: Reduced Graphene Oxide as a Case Study

Alessandro Kovtun et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively investigates networks of randomly stacked reduced graphene oxide 2D nanosheets, revealing two different charge transport behaviors at a critical temperature T*: Efros-Shklovskii variable-range hopping (ES-VRH) below T* and power law behavior above. A microscopic model is proposed to describe charge transport as a geometrical phase transition associated with the metal-insulator transition, showing the validity of the charge transport behavior for all geometries and defects of the nanosheets and suggesting a generalized description on van der Waals and disordered thin films.

Graphene oxide membranes with stable porous structure for ultrafast water transport

Wen-Hai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study presents a highly stable and ultrapermeable zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)-nanocrystal-hybridized graphene oxide membrane prepared using ice templating and in situ crystallization of ZIF-8. The selective growth of ZIF-8 in microporous defects enhances water permeability and mechanical integrity, leading to a 30-fold increase in permeability compared to graphene oxide membranes (GOms). The technique also improves permselectivity and offers potential for developing next-generation nanofiltration membranes.

Artificial channels for confined mass transport at the sub-nanometre scale

Jie Shen et al.

Summary: This review discusses the design, mass transport mechanisms, and potential applications of artificial channels that selectively transport small molecules at the sub-nanometer scale. It highlights the platforms of well-defined nanopores, 1D nanotubes, and 2D nanochannels enabled by synthetic nanomaterials, and explores their structure-property-performance relationships. The practicalities and potential impact of these channels on next-generation sustainable technologies for energy, the environment, and healthcare applications are also discussed.

Mengchen Zhang et al.

Summary: A biomimetic 2D ionic transport channel system based on graphene oxide (GO) membrane was designed, inspired by biological ion channels, showing exceptional K+ transport rate and competitive selectivity. The efficient ion sieving with the ionic GO membrane is achieved through high diffusion and partition coefficients of hydrated monovalent ions, as well as large energy barrier and limited potential gradient of hydrated divalent ions.

Understanding macroscopic assemblies of carbon nanostructures with microstructural complexity

Shijun Wang et al.

Summary: Carbon sp(2) building blocks such as graphene and carbon nanotubes show great potential for structural and functional applications but face challenges in being upscaled into fibers or films due to material imperfections and microstructural irregularities. Their basic structural units are laminates of graphene sheets or closely-packed bundles of carbon nanotubes, leading to morphological corrugation and polydispersity in hierarchical structures. Load transfer in fibers or films occurs through networks of tension-shear force chains. Microstructure-derived theoretical models are developed to analyze overall properties, with predictions aligning with experimental data for graphene films where film thickness and gauge length are controlled.

Enhanced graphitic domains of unreduced graphene oxide and the interplay of hydration behaviour and catalytic activity

Tobias Foller et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the properties of graphene oxide (GO) can be improved by increasing its graphitic domain size through thermal diffusion and clustering of functional groups. The integrity of the functional groups during this process has been confirmed through comprehensive chemical analysis. Additionally, the sheet resistance of GO can be reduced by several orders of magnitude during mild thermal annealing.
