Grain refining enables mixed Cu+/Cu-0 states for CO2 electroreduction to C2+ products at high current density

Xiangzhou Lv et al.

Summary: This work demonstrates the feasibility of tuning the oxidation states of Cu-based catalysts by modulating the electron transfer during the electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR). Cu2O nanospheres with abundant grain boundaries showed lower electron conductivity compared with those with less grain boundaries, which hindered the complete reduction of Cu2O and maintained Cu+ species even at high current densities. The multi-grain Cu2O exhibited a higher faradaic efficiency (FE) for C2+ products, reaching approximately 79% at a high current density of 800 mA cm(-2).
