Breaking the Scaling Relationship Limit: From Single-Atom to Dual-Atom Catalysts

Longbin Li et al.

Summary: This article summarizes the recent progress of dual-atom catalysts (DACs) in heterogeneous catalysis. The evolution of DACs from an unpopular discovery to a research hotspot is illustrated through a timeline. DACs are divided into three categories, and the potential active origins of DACs are revealed by comparing them with single-atom catalysts (SACs). The techniques for constructing DACs are systematically summarized. Furthermore, the underlying active origins of DACs in specific energy- and environment-related reactions are introduced in detail. The contribution of DACs to catalysis, particularly heterogeneous electrocatalysis, is affirmed, and the major challenges and development direction for DACs are discussed.

Enhancing bifunctional electrocatalysts of hollow Co3O4 nanorods with oxygen vacancies towards ORR and OER for Li-O2 batteries

Chanikarn Tomon et al.

Summary: The Co3O4 catalyst with high oxygen vacancy and narrow band gap promotes superior stability in OER and ORR compared to RuO2 and Pt/C catalysts. The relative current decay for OER and ORR is only 7% and 14% for the Co3O4 catalyst, while RuO2 and Pt/C catalysts show larger decreases in stability.

Cycling mechanism of Li2MnO3: Li-CO2 batteries and commonality on oxygen redox in cathode materials

Zengqing Zhuo et al.

Summary: By evaluating the Mn and O states in Li2MnO3, it is found that Mn(III/IV) redox dominates the reversible bulk redox, while surface reactions contribute to the initial charge plateau with oxygen release and carbonate decomposition. The absence of lattice oxygen redox in Li2MnO3 questions the origin of oxygen redox in Li-rich compounds, suggesting opportunities for using alkali-rich materials for catalytic reactions.

Jing Jin et al.

Summary: In this study, a sulfur-doped inverse spinel NiFe2O4 electrocatalyst (S-NiFe2O4) with enhanced electron transfer capability and active sites was reported for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution. Both experimental and theoretical investigations confirmed that sulfur atoms are the active sites of S-NiFe2O4, enhancing the production of hydrogen by lowering the energy barrier of water dissociation.

Deciphering the Oxygen Absorption Pre-edge: A Caveat on its Application for Probing Oxygen Redox Reactions in Batteries

Subhayan Roychoudhury et al.

Summary: This study investigates the O-K pre-edge of 55 oxides covering all 3d TMs in various elements, structures, and electrochemical states, showing that the O-K pre-edge variation in battery cathodes is dominated by changing TM-d states. The results provide a unique way to project the relative energy positions of low-lying TM states and clarify unusual redox reactions. This work offers a critical clarification on O-K pre-edge interpretation and establishes a benchmark database for characterizing redox reactions in batteries and other energy materials.
