Near-Field Mapping of Photonic Eigenmodes in Patterned Silicon Nanocavities by Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

Duncan T. L. Alexander et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential of near-field mapping of photonic eigenmodes supported in planar dielectric nanocavities using electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS). The results show a correlation between EELS excitations and optical eigenmodes, providing insights for photonic engineering applications. The study also demonstrates the high spatial definition of EELS maps and how eigenmode characteristics can be translated into their EELS signatures.

An Inverted Honeycomb Plasmonic Lattice as an Efficient Refractive Index Sensor

Javier Rodriguez-Alvarez et al.

Summary: An efficient refractive index sensor utilizing an Au inverted honeycomb lattice as the main sensing element was proposed. Numerical simulations showed high sensitivity values for thin layers of test materials, capable of detecting slight changes in the refractive index of a water medium. Experimental validation demonstrated that the sensor can be manufactured using a simple method, with measured results consistent with simulations.

Deep- and vacuum-ultraviolet metaphotonic light sources

Arash Ahmadivand et al.

Summary: Recent research has demonstrated the emission of deep-ultraviolet and vacuum-ultraviolet light from artificially engineered meta-atoms through nonlinear harmonic signal generation processes. Optical metasurfaces have revealed various nonlinear optical phenomena in nanosystems, such as second and third harmonic generation, multiphoton luminescence, and four-wave mixing. Plasmonic and all-dielectric flatland metasurfaces allow for successful manipulation of light-matter interactions and substantial enhancement of driving fields, making them promising for efficient radiation of intense and coherent harmonic emissions.

Recent advances in plasmonic nanocavities for single-molecule spectroscopy

Nicolo Maccaferri et al.

Summary: Plasmonic nanocavities can engineer and confine electromagnetic fields to subwavelength volumes, enabling a wide range of applications in sensing, optical trapping, and the investigation of physical and chemical phenomena at single-molecule levels. The extreme sensitivity is made possible by highly confined local field intensity enhancement, which is dependent on the geometry of plasmonic nanocavities.Suitably designed structures that provide engineered local optical fields lead to enhanced optical sensing based on phenomena like surface enhanced Raman scattering, fluorescence, and Forster resonance energy transfer.
