Thermoelectric Performance of Polypropylene/Carbon Nanotube/Ionic Liquid Composites and Its Dependence on Electron Beam Irradiation

Oliver Voigt et al.

Summary: The thermoelectric behavior of polypropylene (PP) based nanocomposites containing single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and five kinds of ionic liquids (Ils) dependent on composite composition and electron beam irradiation (EB) was studied. It was found that it is possible to prepare n-type melt-mixed polymer composites from p-type commercial SWCNTs with relatively high Seebeck coefficients when adding four of the selected Ils. The highest Seebeck coefficients achieved in this study were +49.3 mu V/K (PP/2 wt.% SWCNT) for p-type composites and -27.6 mu V/K (PP/2 wt.% SWCNT/4 wt.% IL type AMIM Cl) for n-type composites.

Ionic-liquid doping of carbon nanotubes with [HMIM][BF4] for flexible thermoelectric generators

Jaemin Jung et al.

Summary: This study investigates the doping mechanisms of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate under different surface states of CNTs controlled by adjusting the amount of anionic surfactants. It is found that imidazolium cations are preferentially adsorbed on the negatively charged CNT surfaces through strong interactions with the anionic head groups of the surfactants, leading to p-doping. On the other hand, more tetrafluoroborate anions can easily access the CNT surface when the CNT surfaces become relatively neutral, resulting in n-doping. These doping mechanisms can be selectively controlled using a simple solution process.

Record high thermoelectric performance of expanded graphite/carbon fiber cement composites enhanced by ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide for building energy harvesting

Jian Wei et al.

Summary: The thermoelectric properties of cement composites were significantly enhanced by introducing the ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (IL [Bmim]Br) into composite interfaces, with the best performance achieved at 3% IL [Bmim]Br content. The enhanced mechanism of [Bmim]Br on thermoelectric properties was carefully investigated, mainly attributed to the migration and rearrangement of the anions and cations of [Bmim]Br in composite interfaces. The durability of EGCFRC was also evaluated, showing a high absolute Seebeck coefficient value even after multiple freezing-thawing cycles.
