Anion-Incorporated Mg-Ion Solvation Modulation Enables Fast Magnesium Storage Kinetics of Conversion-Type Cathode Materials

Yinlin Shen et al.

Summary: An electrolyte design using an anion-incorporated Mg-ion solvation structure is developed to promote the Mg-ion storage reactions of conversion-type cathode materials. The addition of the trifluoromethanesulfonate anion in the Mg-ion electrolyte modulates the solvation structure of Mg2+, facilitating Mg-ion desolvation and significantly expediting the charge transfer of the cathode material. This research provides an efficient strategy for achieving high-rate conversion-type cathode materials for rechargeable magnesium batteries.

Recent developments on anode materials for magnesium-ion batteries: a review

Qi Guo et al.

Summary: In recent years, research interest in the development of next-generation battery systems, particularly Magnesium-ion batteries (MIBs) as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), has been increasing. However, serious issues such as the formation of an irreversible passivation layer on the Mg anode surface need to be resolved in the development of rechargeable MIBs. Strategies including exploration of new electrolytes and alternative anode materials, as well as structural design, dimension reduction, and introduction of the second phase, have been employed to design high-performance MIB anodes.
