Prediction of interfacial shear strength of CNT overwrapped carbon fibers using molecular dynamics and Fourier series decomposition of surface asperities

Tanvir Sohail et al.

Summary: This paper develops a novel approach to determine the fiber/matrix interfacial shear strength (IFSS) in a polymer composite with carbon fiber roughness and the presence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The carbon fiber surface exhibits multi-scale asperities, which are modeled using Fourier series decomposition to capture surface roughness. Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations are used to determine the interfacial shear strength of different surface asperities. The results show that the presence of CNTs enhances the IFSS by about 19%.

Atomic investigation on optimal interfacial bonding for enhanced fracture properties in polymer nanocomposites

B. R. Abhiram et al.

Summary: Functionalization of nanofillers improves interfacial bonding and enhances the mechanical properties of nanocomposites. This study investigates the optimal degree of functionalization using molecular dynamics simulations on carbon nanotube reinforced polymer nanocomposites. The simulations reveal that there exists an optimal degree of functionalization for maximum improvement in elastic property, tensile strength, ductility, and fracture toughness. The findings provide insights into the underlying mechanics of crack propagation and contribute to the design of efficient nanocomposites.

Scalable production of crosslinked rubber nanofibre networks as highly efficient toughening agent for isotactic polypropylene: Toughening mechanism of Non-traditional anisotropic rubber inclusion

Eunse Chang et al.

Summary: A new toughening strategy with nano-structured rubber inclusion is proposed in this study, which effectively enhances the toughness of polypropylene. By integrating vulcanization and in situ fibrillation processes, PP nanocomposites toughened with EPDM nano-fibrils are successfully fabricated, leading to unique properties and improved fracture behavior at a lower EPDM loading. The superior toughening efficiency of the crosslinked EPDM nanofibrillar network may be explained by a collective toughening mechanism involving multiple micro-scale mechanisms.

Multiscale Modeling of Epoxy-Based Nanocomposites Reinforced with Functionalized and Non-Functionalized Graphene Nanoplatelets

Hashim Al Mahmud et al.

Summary: The study shows that introducing large amounts of oxygen and functional groups significantly decreases the elastic and shear moduli of the nanocomposites, while the wrinkled morphology improves the interlocking mechanism between nanoplatelets and the matrix. Increasing the nanoplatelet content and aspect ratio results in improved mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

The role of interface on the toughening and failure mechanisms of thermoplastic nanocomposites reinforced with nanofibrillated rubber

Mahdi Zeidi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on investigating the effects of interface and interfiber interactions on the toughening effects of rubber nanofibers in thermoplastic-based materials. Utilizing molecular dynamics framework, annealed melt-drawn nanofibers were formed and crosslinked using a robust topology-matching algorithm. Results show that grafting the interface with compatibilizer can enhance interfacial shear strength and inhibit the formation of nanovoids, leading to improved toughening effects.
