Role of Noncovalent Interactions on the Electrocatalytic Oxidation of Ethanol in Alkali Metal Hydroxide Solutions

Chenjie Han et al.

Summary: Ethanol fuel cells have low efficiency due to complex interactions between the electrolyte, electrode, and ethanol. Recent studies show that noncovalent interactions from hydrated alkali metal cations and adsorbed OHad on the Pt electrode surface also play an important role in electron transfer. This study systematically investigates noncovalent interactions in different alkali metal hydroxide solutions and finds that they can occupy active sites on the Pt electrode surface and cause slow migration of ethanol molecules in the electrical double layer, significantly impacting the electrooxidation efficiency. Additionally, the study concludes that electro-oxidation efficiency in different solutions follows the order of K+ > Na+ > Rb+ > Cs+ > Li+ due to noncovalent interactions.

Fully-Exposed Pd Cluster Catalyst: An Excellent Catalytic Antibacterial Nanomaterial

Fanchi Meng et al.

Summary: This study reports a material with fully-exposed Pd cluster dispersed on nanodiamond-graphene, which exhibits excellent catalytic antibacterial properties. The fully-exposed Pd cluster nanozyme shows higher oxidase-like catalytic performance than Pd single-atom oxidase mimic, Pd nanoparticles oxidase mimic, and previously reported palladium-based oxidase mimics. The Pd cluster sites efficiently catalyze the decomposition of oxygen to generate reactive oxygen species, resulting in strong antibacterial properties.

Pd Nanoparticles Coupled to NiMoO4-C Nanorods for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Ethanol Oxidation

Meiling Wang et al.

Summary: The study shows that the Pd/NiMoO4-C composite exhibits enhanced catalytic activity and durability for ethanol electro-oxidation compared to commercial Pd/C catalyst, possibly due to strong electron transfer between NiMoO4 nanorods and Pd nanoparticles, resulting in more electrochemical active centers formation. Additionally, the stronger anchoring effect between Pd and C in Pd/NiMoO4-C composites contributes to the improved specific activity for ethanol oxidation.
