Integrated Exertion-Understanding the Design of Human-Computer Integration in an Exertion Context

Josh Andres et al.

Summary: Human-computer interaction is increasingly interested in supporting exertion experiences, and emerging technology allows for not only presenting information but also acting on the exerting user's body. The lack of frameworks for designing human-computer integration in an exertion context prompted the design of three eBike systems to investigate different forms of integration. Based on the results, the first framework with design tactics to guide human-computer integration in an exertion context was presented.

On Eliciting a Sense of Self when Integrating with Computers

Valdemar Danry et al.

Summary: While some Human-Computer Integration (HInt) systems have successfully demonstrated physical and functional integration, they may not become part of the user's identity or create a sense of self, and can even result in self-dissociation. Inconsistent and vague literature on eliciting self-experiences hinders research advancement. To help designers elicit and evaluate a sense of self, experiential structures such as pre-reflective experience, sense of body-ownership and sense of agency should be designed.

Nonscalability and generating digital outer space natures in No Man's Sky

Emma R. Tait et al.

Summary: This article examines the generation of digital outer space natures in the game No Man's Sky and explores the potential applications of games in understanding various forms of nature and promoting behavioral change, education, and conservation. The study finds that nonscalability theory is useful for studying digital outer space natures in games but could benefit from a deeper engagement with the digital. No Man's Sky initially lacked scalability, making players feel disconnected, but subsequent updates introduced limited nonscalability to satisfy players' desire for more impactful exploration.

Summary: Human-Computer Integration (HInt) is a growing paradigm within HCI that seeks to explore how humans merge with computational machines. While this movement has led to a rapid growth in understanding HInt, there are discrepancies among proponents regarding principles, motivations, definitions, and ultimate goals, with various offshoot concepts emerging. SIGHint aims to provide a platform for high-level discussion and information collation, facilitating a better understanding of the relationship between new and diverging ideas and perspectives within Human-Computer Integration.
