Designing Eco-functional Redox Conversions Integrated in Environmental Photo(electro)catalysis

Shi Nee Lou et al.

Summary: The circulation and transformation of resource/energy and the self-cleaning of contaminated environments are driven by solar radiation. Photo(electro)catalysis, which mimics nature's solar conversion processes, is being intensively studied as a key technology for sustainable development. This perspective introduces an integrated approach that combines oxidation and reduction conversions of various substances in a single system by designing photocatalytic materials and systems. The ideal integrated photo(electro)catalytic process should fully utilize the oxidative and reductive powers of semiconductors to improve photoefficiency.

Photocatalytic and Photoelectrochemical Carbon Dioxide Reductions toward Value-Added Multicarbon Products

Haijiao Lu et al.

Summary: Developing new energy sources is crucial for meeting energy demands and reducing CO2 emissions. Converting CO2 into value-added products is a promising strategy, but is limited by low activity and selectivity. The article reviews the basics of PC and PEC CO(2)RRs and discusses the main strategies for achieving high CO2RR activity and selectivity for multicarbon products.

Layered Double Hydroxide Engineering for the Photocatalytic Conversion of Inactive Carbon and Nitrogen Molecules

Peng Miao et al.

Summary: Energy and environmental issues are pressing challenges, and photocatalysis is gaining attention for its green and sustainable features. However, photocatalytic materials still face challenges such as limited light absorption and poor activation for inactive molecules. This article focuses on the material engineering of layered double hydroxide (LDH) as a photocatalyst for activating carbon and nitrogen molecules. Four strategies are summarized for improving reaction activity and product selectivity. This perspective provides a reference for the design of LDH-based photocatalysts to promote practical applications.

Photocatalytic production of H2O2 from water and dioxygen only under visible light using organic polymers: Systematic study of the effects of heteroatoms

Hyejin Kim et al.

Summary: This study designed organic photocatalysts that can produce H2O2 without organic electron donors. The incorporation of O and P elements in CN structure (CNO, CNP, CNOP) increases visible light absorption and hinders photodecomposition of H2O2, leading to CNOP exhibiting the highest production of H2O2 using dioxygen, water, and visible light only.

Crystal phase-dependent generation of mobile OH radicals on TiO2: Revisiting the photocatalytic oxidation mechanism of anatase and rutile

Ji Young Hwang et al.

Summary: The generation of mobile free OH radicals on anatase through a reductive conversion of dissolved O2 is crucial in achieving the mineralization of non-adsorbing substrates, while surface trapped holes lead to the generation of surface-bound OH radicals on both anatase and rutile. Understanding the production pathway of OH radicals in photocatalysis will help optimize their generation for efficient photocatalytic oxidation of pollutants.

Quantitative Photoelectrochemical Conversion of Ammonium to Dinitrogen Using a Bromide-Mediated Redox Cycle

Min Seok Koo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that using RBS in a PEC system can efficiently convert NH4+ to N-2, remove NH4+ more effectively than traditional systems, and prevent the generation of unwanted byproducts. The PEC-Br system shows superiority over the PEC-Cl system and can also inhibit the formation of bromate ions.

Solar denitrification coupled with in situ water splitting

Shinbi Lee et al.

Summary: Utilizing a ternary composite photocatalyst composed of TiO2, Cu-Pd bimetals, and reduced graphene oxide (Cu-Pd/rGO/TiO2), the selective solar conversion for chemical reductant-free denitrification (nitrate to N-2) by coupling nitrate reduction and water oxidation is realized. The unique activity is attributed to the synergic action of Cu as a co-catalyst for nitrate-to-nitrite conversion, Pd for nitrite-to-dinitrogen conversion, and rGO for enhanced charge separation/transfer and H-2 production.

Photoconversion of Cyanide to Dinitrogen Using the Durable Electrode of a TaON Overlayer-Deposited WO3 Film and Visible Light

Min Seok Koo et al.

Summary: This study proposed an engineered photoelectrochemical system that can convert cyanide to nitrogen gas in a stable manner under alkaline conditions, producing non-toxic final products. By enhancing the efficiency of cyanide oxidation and total nitrogen removal through the reaction process of WO3/TaON electrodes under visible light, a new environmentally friendly method was demonstrated to transform cyanide into nitrogen gas and carbon dioxide without using any toxic chemical reagents.
