This case report presents a meningitis case caused by Abiotrophia defectiva in a patient who had undergone neurosurgery, and reviews all cases of central nervous system infections caused by NVS in the literature. This is the first reported case of A. defectiva meningitis in our country, according to the available literature.
Abiotrophia defectiva is a species of nutritionally variable streptococcus (NVS) found in human saliva and dental plaque and associated with infective endocarditis. Isolation of NVS from the central nervous system is very rare. In this case report, meningitis due to Abiotrophia defectiva in a patient who had undergone neurosurgery is presented. In addition, all cases of central nervous system infections caused by NVS in the literature are reviewed with this case. The presented case is the first case of A. defectiva reported as a meningitis agent in our country, according to the available literature.
