Potential microbial bioindicators of phosphorus mining in a temperate deciduous forest

L. M. Mason et al.

Summary: This study identified specific soil microbial taxa associated with manipulated phosphorus availability in forest soils, revealing candidates for phosphorus bioindicators. The research suggests that alleviating P limitation in this ecosystem may be a specialized trait mediated by a few microbial taxa. The findings provide evidence for future studies on microbial linkages to human-induced ecosystem changes.

Innovations to culturing the uncultured microbial majority

William H. Lewis et al.

Summary: The review emphasizes the importance of culturing microorganisms to complement genomic data. Despite the abundance of microbial genome data, experimental testing is crucial to confirm hypotheses about cell biology, ecological roles, and evolution. Culturing remains a priority as the majority of archaeal and bacterial diversity remains uncultured and poorly understood. Advances in efficient cultivation strategies have been driven by a growing interest in and need for cultivating novel microorganisms.

Metagenomic analysis reveals a dynamic microbiome with diversified adaptive functions to utilize high lignocellulosic forages in the cattle rumen

Javad Gharechahi et al.

Summary: Rumen microbiota play a key role in the digestion and utilization of plant materials, by degrading lignocellulosic substrates and fermenting degraded products. Genomic analysis of rumen microbiota in ruminant species revealed diverse microbial taxa, which aid in adapting to different lignocellulosic substrates.

Evaluation of the differences between biofilm and planktonic Brucella abortus via metabolomics and proteomics

Taishan Tang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the differences between biofilm and planktonic Brucella abortus using metabolomics and proteomics, identifying significant differential metabolites and differentially expressed proteins. The metabolomics analysis showed enrichment in fatty acid biosynthesis and linoleic acid metabolism, while proteomics revealed enrichment in various metabolic and degradation-related pathways. Correlation analysis indicated key metabolites and proteins involved in the biofilm-forming process of Brucella abortus.

Urban wastewater bacterial communities assemble into seasonal steady states

Emily Lou LaMartina et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that environmental conditions related to seasonal change and geographical differences in climate structure the bacterial communities in urban sanitary sewers. The human bacterial component of wastewater decreases in proportion and exhibits stochastic temporal variation during transit from residences to treatment plants, while the resident sewer community increases in abundance during transit and cycles seasonally according to changes in wastewater temperature. Wastewater bacterial communities from other northern US cities follow similar temporal trends to those in Milwaukee, but southern US cities have distinct community compositions and seasonal patterns.
