Limits to Paris compatibility of CO2 capture and utilization

Kiane de Kleijne et al.

Summary: This study investigates the compatibility of CCU technologies with the temperature goals of the Paris Agreement. Based on life cycle emissions and technological maturity criteria, it analyzes the usage of CCU technologies using atmospheric, biogenic, or fossil CO2. The findings suggest that CCU technologies with technology readiness levels (TRLs) of 6 or higher can be Paris compatible in 2030 for certain industries, while only products storing CO2 permanently or produced from zero-emissions energy can be Paris compatible in 2050.

Summary: Biorefinery utilizing plant materials from marine or terrestrial sources aims to produce high value-added products through less aggressive processes. A study compared the efficiencies and environmental performances of a Formic acid pretreatment based biorefinery with a conventional Dilute acid pretreatment based one, showing superiority in various aspects except for ODP. The Formiline supply chain was expanded to produce additional products with positive GHG reduction potentials, contributing to China's carbon neutrality ambition.

Liquid-Liquid Extraction of Formic Acid with 2-Methyltetrahydrofuran: Experiments, Process Modeling, and Economics

Antero T. Laitinen et al.

Summary: Formic acid (FA) is successfully extracted from CO2 electrolysis using 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MTHF), with vapor-liquid equilibrium (VLE) data and liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data obtained. A hybrid extraction and distillation process is designed to produce commercial grade product. Economic analysis shows that 2-MTHF is a cost-effective solvent for extracting FA from dilute streams (<20 wt % FA).

A review on conventional and novel materials towards heavy metal adsorption in wastewater treatment application

Wai Siong Chai et al.

Summary: Wastewater treatment is still a critical issue globally, and the removal of heavy metals is of utmost importance. Adsorption is the most common technique, with activated carbon being the traditional adsorbent, but facing challenges in separation and cost. Novel materials show competitiveness with excellent attributes like large surface area and high chemical inertness, presenting a promising future for heavy metal adsorption in wastewater treatment.

Single Pass CO2 Conversion Exceeding 85% in the Electrosynthesis of Multicarbon Products via Local CO2 Regeneration

Colin P. O'Brien et al.

Summary: The CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) provides an opportunity to consume CO2 and produce desirable products, but the alkaline conditions required often lead to loss of input CO2 to bicarbonate and carbonate, limiting the conversion of CO2 to multicarbon products. This study found that cation exchange membranes (CEMs) and bipolar membranes (BPMs) were not ideal for providing locally alkaline conditions, but the development of a permeable CO2 regeneration layer (PCRL) allowed for a more efficient CO2 conversion process with limited CO2 crossover.

Comparative life cycle assessment of electrochemical upgrading of CO2 to fuels and feedstocks

Shariful Kibria Nabil et al.

Summary: Development of electrochemical pathways for converting CO2 into valuable products has been rapidly progressing in the past decade. A comparative life cycle assessment was conducted to evaluate one-step and two-step electrochemical conversion of CO2, revealing that the two-step electrosynthesis pathways are more compelling in terms of climate benefits. The carbon intensity of electrosynthesis products is primarily influenced by the significant energy requirements for conversion and product separation phases.
